Excerpt from Improving Livestock Marketing Efficiency: A Study of Nine Cooperative Livestock Markets in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan Each of the nine markets Operated a weekly auction. In addition most of them also sold some livestock primarily hogs on other days of the week. During the study, the facility layout and Opera tion of each was studied in detail and records showing volume of receipts and detailed costs and income were analyzed. This report thus shows comparisons of these nine markets. It also gives suggestions for improved efficiency based on these findings. It was not possible to make all the desired comparisons of costs because sufficient records had not been kept to show accurate costs by species. Also, the associations maintained different types of accounting systems. However there was enough similarity to adjust the records for definite comparisons of the major items. The nine markets varied widely in efficiency. A market might be doing a good job in one respect but have unduly high costs in another. For the most part the variation followed a pattern in line with the economies of scale concept; that is, the largest markets showed lowest costs and greatest efficiency. However, there were notable exceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This groundbreaking volume presents a comprehensive view of the many concerns of those involved with livestock and meat marketing. During the 1980s, livestock production faced some critical changes. Product and feed prices became less stable, cycles lost their century-old patterns, both competition and trade barriers seemed to rise, and market outlets shrank in number and ownership diversity. At the same time, the United States demography became increasingly older, while new and confusing health concerns about red meat arose rapidly. This practical book introduces the reader to a range of issues of the livestock marketing system and looks ahead to such future issues as biotechnology, human health, and food safety. Considerable interest is given to international trade, an increasingly important sector in the market. Marketing Livestock and Meat is a concise and convenient compendium of diverse information. It provides functionaries in the system with an overall concept of how the market functions as a whole to promote better skills and strategies for marketing of red meats. The author describes specific applications vital to successful operation of the complex and far-reaching marketing system of meat and livestock, including international trade, grades and grading, health matters, demand for meat, price reporting and electronic markets, costs and benefits, and their combination into marketing strategies for producers. To supplement the research, theories, and strategies presented in this important book, there are many charts, graphs, and photographs. All persons connected to the marketing of meat and livestock--undergraduate students in North America, foreign students interested in exporting meat to the U. S., and most segments of the livestock sector, including supply and processing firms and retailers--will benefit from this important book.

The potential to livestock development in Ethiopia and the region at all is very wide. Detailed stratification of livestock development in to areas where they fit best in market integration through alternative channels is the main components of livestock market development. In order to meet up success on livestock market development projects and institutional supports, market evaluation on the magnitude and seasonality of supply and price analysis is necessary. Hence, this study can be an indication to the comparative advantage of such proposals and strategic development options in assessing the degree of market efficiency in terms of marketing margins and spatial price correlation of markets.likewise, the study with the above issue can also help policy makers to policy decision and supportive intervention of livestock marketing in the region.
