A riveting story of a pivotal battle in the Seven Years’ War that changed Canadian history forever. Seventeen-year-old Sébastien de L’Espérance and his friend Guillaume have fought to keep the British from getting a foothold in Île Royale (now Cape Breton Island) ever since the young men came from France two years ago. Britain has blockaded Louisbourg, and supplies for the 4000 inhabitants are running short. Despite Louisbourg’s massive defences, if cut off from supplies provided by France, it cannot survive. Both young men are members of the Compagnies Franches de la Marine. They are sent out on scouting missions that provide valuable information about the British troops — troops which outnumber the French three to one. When British warships arrive in force, Sébastien vows to defend the town, his friend Guillaume, and the woman he loves.

Louisbourg represented a major threat to Anglo-American plans to invade Canada. As by-passing it would leave an immensely powerful enemy base astride the Anglo-American lines of communication, Louisbourg had to be taken. The siege itself was a tremendous pounding match. Faced with strong beach defenses and rough weather, it took six days to land the troops and was only achieved by a stroke of daring on the part of a young Brigadier named James Wolfe who managed to turn the French beach position. The story is largely based on first-hand accounts from the journals of several participants including Lord Jeffrey Amherst and of French Governor Drucour, whose excellent account has never been published. The 1758 siege of Louisbourg was the most extensive siege operation ever attempted by the British forces in North America up to that time. Louisbourg represented a major threat to Anglo-American plans to invade Canada. By-passing it would leave an immensely powerful enemy base astride the Anglo-American lines of communication - Louisbourg had to be taken. The capture of Louisbourg would eliminate France's most important naval base in North America and clear the route to Quebec. The British army that besieged Fortress Louisbourg was larger than the one that was to lay siege to Quebec the following year. The land forces were led by Maj Gen Jeffery Amherst with skill and competence. Amherst also saw the extraordinary talents of youngJames Wolfe as a Brigade Commander and he gave him every opportunity to shine. Wolfe repaid him by performing brilliantly from the day of the landing. Rene Chartrand's text explains the background to the siege including the earlier naval operations, and the expulsion of the Acadian French populace from Nova Scotia in 1755 which resulted in unprecedented levels of partisan warfare on the western borders of Nova Scotia. The siege itself was a tremendous pounding match. Faced with strong beach defences and rough weather, it took six days to land the troops and was only achieved by a stroke of daring on the part of a young Brigadier named James Wolfe who managed to turn the French beach position.

"Louisbourg, France's ... fortress on Cape Breton Island's foggy Atlantic coast, dominated access to the St. Lawrence and colonial New France for forty years in the mid-eighteenth century. Hugh Boscawen describes how Britain's war minister William Pitt launched four fleets in a coordinated campaign to prevent France from reinforcing Louisbourg [during the French and Indian War]. As the author shows, the Royal Navy outfought its opponents before General Jeffrey Amherst and Brigadier James Wolfe successfully led 14,000 British regulars ... in a hard-fought assault landing ... The victory marked a turning point in British fortunes and precipitated the end of French rule in North America ... Victory enabled Wolfe to sail up an unguarded St. Lawrence to attack Quebec in 1759"--Jacket.

An eager political crusader wants to close Reef ’s former group home, and he will stop at nothing to get media attention, including manipulating news items. Finding himself at the centre of growing controversy, Reef is pushed to his limits. Before he leaves town, Reef must face his demons and make some tough choices or else risk losing everything he has worked for, including the only girl he has ever loved.

The War of 1812 comes to life through the eyes of a young Canadian boy. It's 1812. War has begun, and thirteen-year-old Alexander (Sandy) MacKay is jealous when his older brother Angus goes off with their father to fight the Americans attacking the Niagara region. Too young to know the darker side of battle, he resents being left to shoulder the work on his family's farm. Itching to get in on the action, he sneaks away from home and heads to Lundy's Lane to join up with the local militia. But battle is imminent, and now there's not much his father can do except try to shield him from the worst of the fighting. Sandy's idealized notions of what battle will be like are shattered when the man standing before him is killed by a musket ball and Sandy's own brother is severely wounded. At the battle of Lundy's Lane, the united Canadian/British forces turn the tide against the American troops, but Sandy comes to know how chilling war can be. Just in time for the bicentennial of the War of 1812, A Call to Battle is a sobering look at the realities of war. Author Gillian Chan skillfully depicts the transformation of an impetuous young boy, full of boyish enthusiasm, into a more realistic young man who emerges on the other side of war.

"The scar didn't use to show," says Daniel, the narrator of the title story. But scars have a way of manifesting themselves, visually or otherwise, and the stories in this collection illustrate a varied compendium of characters marked in some way by their injuries. Having lost a breast to cancer, a young woman visits a psychic seeking answers to the questions in her life. A bullied boy finds solace in the arrival of another unfortunate who has attracted the attention of his tormentors. A divorced father attempts to shield his young daughter from the trauma of tragedy. An eight-year-old boy witnesses death for the first time, a massage therapist is unnerved by the discovery he makes about a new client, and a young widow flounders in her struggle to cope with the loss of her husband. These and other characters come to vivid life in stories told with the sensitivity and skill that have earned the author continued critical praise.
