Parasitology Highly detailed textbook on parasites and parasite relationships The fully revised edition of Parasitology: An Integrated Approach holds true to its engaging and easy-to-read approach. It comprehensively covers the complex and dynamic interaction between the parasite and its host ranging from invertebrates to vertebrates. Following an integrated approach, the authors explain how the study of parasites requires an understanding of biological concepts such as growth and reproduction, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, and pathology. In this second edition, they further address parasites and parasite relationships in the grand scheme of global changes and their impact. This textbook also reviews the often-neglected positive aspects of parasite infections and how humans have used parasites for their own advantage. Parasitology: An Integrated Approach, 2nd edition includes supplementary learning resources such as self-assessment quizzes, practical exercises, and an extensive collection of photographs. Now includes parasite life cycles in colour Strong focus on parasite interactions with other pathogens such as bacteria and viruses Discusses major advancements in the field of parasite diagnostics Additional image material and learning resources (quizzes, practical exercises) provided online A valuable and comprehensive learning resource for undergraduate students in the biological, biomedical and veterinary sciences and in medicine. It is also of interest to postgraduates and professionals with an interest including but not limited to parasitology, animal welfare, ecology, and medical microbiology.

This training guide for medical students offers an introduction to the field of medical parasitology. Clearly and concisely written, it contains background information about selected human parasites, their epidemiology and control, and the most important animal vectors of human diseases. It also presents various exercises that can be used to consolidate the studied material, including training tests, exemplary case history, and tables. The book also offers a unique, expanded glossary of basic terms in medical parasitology, in addition to semi-diagrammatic identification keys for the most prominent human parasites. The text will appeal to medical students, anyone involved in the teaching and research of human parasitology, and physicians dealing with human parasites.

Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide to the Study of Parasitology With the rapid growth of Parasitology there is also a growing demand for laboratory instruction in this field. The author's greatest desire during the time that he has been engaged in teaching this subject has been to place the work upon a good systematic footing, giving it proper rank with other phases of applied biology. The following exercises are based upon several courses in Parasitology (now merged into two) that have been given by the author at the University of California during the past four years, including two summer sessions. Each exercise has had careful testing in the laboratory and is practical. The aim of this Guide is to give the student a wide practical view of the field so that he might have a fair grasp of the general subject in its application to the health and well-being of man and beast. The exercises are in sufficient detail so that the student is enabled to continue work on some specific group or species if he so chooses. The exercises are arranged to provide sufficient matter for a laboratory session requiring from two and a half to three hours for each. A number of the exercises are divided into two or three parts, and this may be useful in cases where less time is available. The two standard courses given at the University of California upon which these exercises are based are Human Parasitology (first half year) and Veterinary Parasitology (second half year), each with three lectures per week and two laboratory sessions of from 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The author wishes to gratefully acknowledge the very able assistance rendered by Mr. A. B. Shaw, Jr., in the preparation of this laboratory guide. Cases in Human Parasitology focuses solely on parasites that adversely affect humans. Intended as a supplement to textbooks in human parasitology for undergraduate and medical school courses, this book of 62 case studies is also an important educational reference source for health care scientists active in the field of parasitology. The first four sections cover different groups of parasites, including intestinal protozoa; blood and tissue protozoa; cestodes, trematodes, and intestinal nematodes; and blood and tissue nematodes. The last section covers challenging cases and details non-parasitic infections in patients with symptoms closely resembling those of parasitic infections. Each case study opens with a patient history and description of symptoms, and most are accompanied by a color image of the parasite described. Thought-provoking questions are posed, covering everything from diagnosis and the life cycle of the identified parasite to epidemiology and prevention. The questions stimulate discussion while emphasizing the relationship of diagnosis to patient care. Cases present new, emerging, and well-known parasites, and parasites infrequently encountered in the United States are included. The book concludes with a glossary of descriptive terms. Cases in Human Parasitology is an excellent reinforcement of material learned in a clinical or laboratory setting. It will be useful for pathology residents and infectious disease fellows in preparing for board exams and it will serve in continuing the education of medical technologists involved in diagnostic parasitology. Key Features: Over 60 case studies focusing on intestinal protozoa, blood and tissue protozoa, cestodes, trematodes, and intestinal nematodes, as well as blood and tissue nematodes Concise cases begin with patient history and symptoms, relevant clinical findings and laboratory data, and in most cases relevant four-color images; proceed with discussion questions; and conclude with answers to the questions Challenging cases throughout; final section presents students with unusual patient histories and symptoms Reinforces material which is covered in a laboratory or clinical setting
