"How the Rhodesian Ridgeback Got Its Ridge" is a charmingly illustrated and cleverly written fable, about how this breed of dog from southern Africa got the trademark stripe of hair on its back. In this whimsical creation tale, God surveys the various dogs He has created, and, in ticking off their idiosyncracies, decides to try one more time in creating the perfect canine. But in making a dog that is as smart as it is beautiful, God sets the stage for a mishap that leads to unintended consequences. If you love Ridgebacks and want to share that passion with a younger generation - or if you just love a clever story, beautifully told and illustrated - this is the book for you.

Layla The Ridgeless Rhodesian RidgebackLaylas story is about being different. Layla shows how perseverance can overcome self-doubt and rejection. Her faith, hope and love overcome all obstacles. Why Layla? Hers is a very personal story that developed into the book you have before you. The words (640+-) are unchanged since it was written four years ago. The brilliant illustrations mesh seamlessly with the story.I work for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delray Beach, Florida. For the past three years I have served as the Education Coordinator, bus driver, mentor and general fix-it person at the club. The Delray club serves 250 members with ages ranging from 6-18 years old. Regardless of which hat I wear, these children are the greatest teachers Ive encountered. Simply, I go to work to return that gift.Like Layla our children are considered by some to be at risk ? I think many agree that all of our children today are at risk. They have a myriad of influences and distractions that bombard and challenge even the brightest of them to keep their focus. When Layla was in an early proof stage I used small reading focus groups. I had them read in groups of 3-5 and I observed them. They read it, understood it, cried, smiled and many hugged me after they read it. That made me cry as well. You see, Laylas story is like many of our members stories. They too have been ignored and cast aside. For many, our club is their safe harbor. My target group is ages 6-9, yet all ages have enjoyed it. I realize Ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback is a mouthful but they handle it and usually laugh when they read it. Heres the real payoff for me. More than a dozen kids have said after reading Layla that they want to write a book. Now, Im not a seasoned childrens author but I did play some baseball and I know a grand slam from a double! What about professional educators? The response has been overwhelmingly positive. I dont say that in a prideful way because I had little to do with it. The story was on my heart. I sat out on my patio and wrote it on paper in less than 15 minutes. Thanks to a very special person in my life, Laylas story was brought out of a file and dusted off. Thanks to another special friend Laylas story was brought to life with exquisite illustrations. Finally, Layla teaches us that love suffers long, endures all things and never fails. I hope you fall in love with Layla as I did. Respectfully Submitted,Bobby Brewster185 NE 4th Ave. Delray Beach, Fl. 33483 -- 561-400-7799 -- [email protected]

Good Dog marks the welcome return of alternative cartoonist Graham Chaffee, who, after his successful 2003 collection of short stories, The Most Important Thing and other Stories, took a detour to devote himself to the art of tattooing, before charging back with his new, beautifully conceived graphic novel. Ivan, who is plagued by terrible nightmares about chickens and rabbits, is a good dog―if only someone would notice. Readers accompany the stray as he navigates dog society, weathers pack politics, and surveys canine-human interactions. Good Dog’s story and pen-and-ink art are deceptively simple, but Chaffee uses the approachability of the subject matter as a device to explore topics such as independence, security, assimilation, loyalty, and violence. Preteen-and-up dog fanciers, especially, will warm to the well-meaning Ivan and his exploits with a motley assortment of Scotties, Bulldogs, and mutts. Chaffee combines illustrative gravitas with cartooning verve and creates a richly textured, dog’s-eye view of the world. The story is a rousing Jack Londonesque adventure as well as a moral parable.

The African dog, or Africanis, is the original domestic dog of southern Africa, whose ancient origins can be traced back to the prehistoric wild wolf packs of Arabia and India. This unique and fascinating study recreates for us the journey of the dog's primitive canine ancestors, from their earliest presence at the fire of Stone Age humans, through the evolution from wolf to protodog to domestic dog, and subsequent migration into the African continent with nomadic Neolithic herders. Absorbing, informative, packed full of intriguing insights based on the author's own extensive experience with the Africanis, the book builds a strong case for the recognition, re-evaluation and conservation of these special dogs, which deserve to be cherished both for their own sake and as part of the unique national heritage of southern Africa. The Story of the African Dog is a book which deserves a place on every dog-lover's bookshelf.
