Excerpt from History of Congregationalism: And Memorials of the Churches, of Our Order in Suffolk More than forty years have elapsed since John Browne, of Wrentham, issued his truly great book on "The History of Congregationalism in Suffolk and Norfolk." During these years great and important changes have taken place in all our churches, and a modern edition of this work has been long overdue. As Mr. Browne's book owed its origin to the generosity of Mr.D. H.Goddard, the present work owes its origin to the generosity of Mr. H. Fairfax Harwood, of Tuddenham Hall, Ipswich. When Mr. Harwood suggested a re-issue of this history, and asked me to undertake it, it was with great reluctance and diffidence that I consented; I felt then, as I feel now, that others could have done the work much more efficiently than I could. At the same time, realising the importance and value of the work, I could not refuse; and so, conscious of many defects, I faced the task. I need hardly say that this book is largely an example of building upon another man's foundation. But for the devoted labours of John Browne this work had never seen the light. In perusing the original volume nothing has impressed me more than the immense labour and patient research devoted to it. In that work Mr. Browne has laid, not only the churches of Suffolk and Norfolk, but Congregationalism throughout the country under a vast debt of gratitude. In carrying out the purpose I had in my mind of bringing this work up to date, I found materials accumulating so rapidly that, if the volume was to be kept within reasonable limits, much of the original, not strictly relevant, would have to be omitted. Accordingly I have re-written the whole, omitting the Norfolk section, and that relating to the Baptist churches, together with some of the footnotes that seemed to me unnecessary. Excerpt from History of Congregationalism and Memorials of the Churches in Norfolk and Suffolk This book owes its origin to the generosity of Mr. D. H. Goddard, late of Newcastle, now of Chester-le-Street, who, at the meeting of the Congregational Union at Ipswich in 1872, offered a premium for the production of a History of Congregationalism in Norfolk and Suffolk. The execution of the work was, without solicitation on my part, confided to me. Living at a distance from libraries, I have to a great extent been dependent on my own collection of MSS., books, sermons, and tracts; almost all those which are quoted, except otherwise indicated, being in my own possession: but, whilst the work has been passing through the press, I have made considerable additions of interesting and important matter from the Record Office, and the British Museum. I am indebted to S. W. Rix, Esq., of Beccles, for the use of his collections illustrative of the history of Congregationalism in these two counties, and for the encouragement he has, for many years, given me to attempt such a work as the present; to the Rev. Geo. Gould, of Norwich, for the use of MSS. which have been very helpful to me; and to the Rev. T. W. Davids, of Upton, for contributions and counsels which have been of great value. My best thanks are also due to the Rev. T. Hunter, for affording me facilities for consulting books and MSS. in Dr. Williams' Library; and to those pastors of churches who have allowed me to copy, or make extracts from, their several church books. I have taken these, rather than any existing descriptions of the churches, as the basis of this history. The history of the Baptist Churches is more of a fragment than I desired; it is nearly complete to the close of last century, but sufficient information with regard to many later formed churches has not been supplied. The facts here carefully gathered together may hereafter furnish occasion for a more general view of East Anglian Congregationalism, which the limits of this volume prevent me from adding. What is the Gospel, and how is it to be commended? This question encapsulates the running theme of this collection of papers. In five essays Professor Sell discusses some Puritans, Cambridge Platonists, Quakers, and critics of deism and pantheism who sought to articulate the Gospel in the intellectual environment in which they had been set. Their underlying concerns are of continuing relevance in current ecumenical discussion, as are questions of doctrinal change and development, the subjects of two further papers. A paper on spirituality echoes some of the concerns of the Separatists, Platonists, and Quakers, but views them in relation to the widespread interest in the topic at the present time. Two papers concern the ways in which the Gospel is shared in ecumenical circles, with special reference to the Holy Spirit, ecclesiology, and the Reformed contribution to interconfessional discussion. A bibliographical survey of Reformed theology in twentieth-century Britain shows the range of interest within one ecclesiastical tradition, while such wider issues as contextual theology, inclusivism, and the peril of sectarianism are discussed in a further paper. The book concludes with an attempt to answer the question, what is involved in proclaiming the Gospel of reconciliation today?
