Disorganization, apprehension, and poor ratings for nurse satisfaction were found in a newly created chemical dependency unit. Being that an addiction nurse carries a huge responsibility that can positively or negatively affect a patient in the initial stages of recovery from chemical dependency; the goal of this project was to determine what steps are needed to enhance the nursing care in this unit. An extensive literature search confirmed that an educational plan including essential knowledge about addiction, addiction treatment, the role of an addictions nurse, and the expectations of the job was required. A plan was formulated using Peplau's Interpersonal Relations Theory as the nursing model. Steps were outlined for the implementation, evaluation and dissemination of the educational plan and the predicted findings. The research presumption is that by enhancing nursing care through education, patient care and patient outcomes will be positively impacted.
