The poems in this collection contain the poets reminiscences of his childhood, and bemoan the loss of its innocence with the passage of time. They are also about love - its complications, pains and even its joys. But even the simple love poems usually contain a much deeper message; it is up to the reader to explore the various levels of meaning for himself or herself. His verse is thoughtful without being pretentious. On the surface it appears disarmingly simple and direct, but frequently has something profound and significant to communicate.

'Thank the gods for poets like Varn who stand undaunted at the prospect of unmasking the “bloodied face of history” as inextricably tied to the most pervasive prophecies of religion—those stories that leave “not a creature…unshivering.” Varn’s Apocalyptics shies from neither grandiosity nor grotesquery, neither high nor low society, for isn’t it precisely the blood—some stranger’s bodily fluid—that is to save? From “dumpster diving,” ghosts take flight. From “rancid butter,” a flock of magpies. Enter this text prepared to rub shoulders with archetypes amidst a house of mirrors in darkness, to open old tomes with your teeth and drool enough to smudge creation. And of all the “thou shalt nots” you can recover from the rubble, only remember one: Do not be afraid.' —Dylan Krieger, author of Giving Godhead

The finest ghazals of Mir Taqi Mir, the most accomplished of Urdu poets. The prolific Mir Taqi Mir (1723–1810), widely regarded as the most accomplished poet in Urdu, composed his ghazals—a poetic form of rhyming couplets—in a distinctive Indian style arising from the Persian ghazal tradition. Here, the lover and beloved live in a world of extremes: the outsider is the hero, prosperity is poverty, and death would be preferable to the indifference of the beloved. Ghazals offers a comprehensive collection of Mir’s finest work, translated by a renowned expert on Urdu poetry.

The primary aim of this book is to enable its audience in composing ghazals, including writing lyrics and setting music melody to it. The book is unique and original in that it introduces the history of ghazal, elaborates its technical structure and provides guidance on setting a musical score. The book also incorporates some of my compositions over the past four decades – 18 Urdu ghazals and 1 Nazm in a collection that my ghazal-loving friends affectionately call “Diwan-e-Aman” in the lighter vein. The impetus and inspiration behind these compositions are the rubayaths of the famous Persian poet Omar Qayyam and the ghazals of Hazrat Amir Khusrau. I am greatly indebted to those immortal poets. It is the outcome of my humble effort to strike a golden mean between using easily understandable language, drawing from the depths of literature and maintaining originality.

GHAZALS of SADI Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Sadi (Saadi or Sa'di) of Shiraz (1210-1291), a contemporary of Rumi who influenced him, was a Sufi Perfect Master (Qutub) Poet who expressed himself in the ruba'i form as well as hundreds of ghazals in his beautiful Divan that often also contained images from dervish dancing. Sadi was a great traveller who spent forty years on the road throughout the Middle-East, North Africa and India and many of the incidents he experienced he wrote down in his two most famous works when he finally returned to his beloved birth-place... The BOOK of GHAZALS (Mystical Love Poems/Songs) of 'ATTAR (Large Print & Format Edition) Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Farid al-din 'Attar is seen with Sana'i and Rumi (who he met and influenced) as one of the three most important Sufi Poet-Masters of the 13th century. He composed over forty books mainly in the epic masnavi form, his most famous being The Book of God and The Conference of the Birds. He also composed many powerful mystical poems in the ghazal form that influenced Sadi and Hafiz and all who came later. 'Attar's powerful, honest and controversial ghazals remain as fresh today as they always were. With 'Attar the image of the 'rend'... the drunken debauchee, the thief of love, the carefree outsider, the honest scallywag, appears as the poet, the lover... the voice of the ghazal. The way of the malamati, or the path of 'no blame' has now stepped onto the stage of the play of the history of the ghazal and the story of the lover and beloved, the wine and the intoxicated, the Master and the devotee... will never be the same again! Here for the first time is a large selection of over 400 of his ghazals in the correct-rhyme structure with the beauty and meaning of these immortal ghazals. Introduction on his Life & Times and Poetry and an essay on Sufi Poetry and the Ghazal. Selected Bibliography & Glossary. 700 pages. Large Print (16pt) & Large Format (7" x 10").
