A few words upon the plan on which the General Index is compiled may facilitate its use. At first an attempt was made to supersede altogether the special Indexes by em bodying in it the whole of the information they contain, including every paginal reference. This attempt, however, was soon relinquished as alike misleading and unmanage able. For examfle: the proper name of Ashton, under its three forms of Ashton, Asheton and Assheton, occurs in sixteen of the separate Indexes, embodies four hundred and thirty-eight distinct references, and occupies thirteen columns or six and a half pages of small type.
