Excerpt from Forty-First Annual Report of the State Board of Health of Massachusetts, 1910 The most seriously Objectionable conditions thus far encountered have been in the village of Somerset on the easterly side of Mt. Hope Bay, opposite the northerly end of the city Of Fall River. Samples of water were collected from a number Of wells in that village in the latter part Of 1907, and, the results having shown that the water was very badly polluted, the Board, in a communication to the town, expressed the Opinion that the use of water from these wells should be prevented, and called attention to the need Of a general system Of water supply in this village. Nothing having been done, however, a further examination of the water of these wells was made in the latter part Of 1909, and, the results showing that practically all Of these wells were grossly polluted by sewage and the character Of the water such as to be likely to be very injurious to the health Of those who used it for drinking, the Board has again recommended that steps be taken by the town without fur ther delay to provide an adequate supply Of good water for the use of the inhabitants of this Village.
