Of the fertilizer trials herein discussed was one of the recognized objectives of the Citrus Experiment Station when a new site was purchased in the year' 1914. The land chosen for planting the experimental grove was selected largely because of the apparent uniformity 'of the soil, and of the past cultural practices. Thus it was'deemed particularly suitable for the purpose of conduct ing the trials under consideration. It seems desirable at this time to discuss somewhat in detail the history and the cultural treatment of the land during the periods preceding and following the planting of the trees, and especially during the latter period.
