The present thesis investigates the impact of the internationalization of top management teams (TMTs) on firm performance. Based on the Upper Echelon theory of Hambrick and Mason (1984), we operated TMT internationalization under two distinct demographic constructs, namely TMT nationality diversity and TMT diversity in international experience. We tested the individual and combined effects of those two characteristics of TMTs on firm performance. Demographic data was collected on a sample of TMTs of forty-five large Swiss MNCs and we used multiple OLS regression as our methodology for statistical analysis. While the positive main effect of TMT international experience on firm performance has only been partially confirmed, we found no significant impact of TMT nationality diversity on corporate results. However, it appeared that TMT nationality diversity holds a positive moderating effect on the relationship between TMT international experience and firm performance. Thus we may recommended to CEOs and management boards of MNCs to not only select internationally seasoned and diverse executives but also to promote a global culture in the ranks of their company's senior management.

The present thesis investigates the relationship between regionalization strategy and firm performance and the moderating effect of Top Management Team (TMT) diversity. Based on the Upper Echelon theory of Hambrick and Mason (1984), inter-regional nationality diversity and inter-regional experience were operationalized to capture TMT internationalization. A multiple OLS regression and a moderation analysis were used for our statistical analysis. The sample initially consisted of the 100 largest stock listed companies in Germany for 2013 and 2015, however, lack of data availability alleviated our final dataset. The positive relationship between the degree of regionalization and firm performance narrowly missed the statistical significance level by only 2 percentage points. While statistically insignificant, we found a negative moderating effect of TMT inter-regional nationality diversity, whereas the moderating effect of inter-regional experience on the relationship between regionalization and firm performance appears to be positive. While the thesis supports existing findings by highlighting the increased performance of intraregional oriented companies and recommending companies to compose their TMT in line with their strategy, it calls for further investigation on the moderating effects of diversity attributes through the eyes of the yet under-researched concept of regionalization.

This book integrates and assesses the vast and rapidly growing literature on strategic leadership, which is the study of top executives and their effects on organizations. The basic premise is that in order to understand why organizations do the things they do, or perform the way they do, we need to deeply comprehend the people at the top-- their experiences, abilities, values, social connections, aspirations, and other human features. The actions--or inactions--of a relatively small number of key people at the apex of an organization can dramatically affect organizational outcomes. The scope of strategic leadership includes individual executives, especially chief executive officers (CEOs), groups of executives (top management teams, or TMTs); and governing bodies (particularly boards of directors). Accordingly, the book addresses an array of topics regarding CEOs (e.g., values, personality, motives, demography, succession, and compensation); TMTs (including composition, processes, and dynamics); and boards of directors (why boards look and behave the way they do, and the consequences of board profiles and behaviors). Strategic Leadership synthesizes what is known about strategic leadership and indicates new research directions. The book is meant primarily for scholars who strive to assess and understand the phenomena of strategic leadership. It offers a considerable foundation on which professionals involved in executive search, compensation, appraisal and staffing, as well as board members who evaluate executive performance and potential, might build their tools and perspectives.

In a context of continuing globalization and changing regulations, the workforce has become increasingly diverse and with it the top management team (TMT). This increased heterogeneity has given renewed attention to Hambrick and Mason's upper echelon theory (1984), which links TMT demographic characteristics with firm outcome. As previous research has been inconclusive, this thesis aims to re-examine the TMT diversity variables nationality, age, gender and team tenure and their respective influence on firm performance. In a second step, the contextual variable of novelty of international expansion is added, in order to examine if it has a moderating influence on the relation between diversity variable and performance. Company and top management team data was collected for 100 Swiss and Dutch stock-listed companies and the information processing perspective was adopted. The results show a negative relation between age diversity difference and subsequent return on assets, whereas no significant relationship between the other diversity variables and performance could be found. No significant interaction effect of novelty rate of international expansion as moderator could be demonstrated either. This thesis serves to illustrate the complexity of the diversity field and the difference in outcome depending on the analysed dimension and the context.

As globalization evolves, top management teams and board of directors in large corporations become increasingly international. This thesis aims at examining the extent of internationality of these two corporate elite bodies and at testing whether the internationality of the board of directors and the top management team are related. Drawing on the Upper Echelons and Schneider's (1987) ASA-theory, it is stated that either the nationality diversity or the international experience of the board of directors will influence the percentage of foreigners or the degree of international experience of the TMT. Thereby, it is clearly distinguished between these two measures since international experience and nationality differ in their focus even though they are both part of the general construct internationality. Based on a study of 38 Swiss corporations, listed on the Enlarged SMI between 2014 and 2016, it is concluded that boards and TMTs in Switzerland are nowadays highly internationalized. Strong support was found for the ASA-model, since an effect of board internationality on TMT internationality along all four combinations of nationality diversity and international experience was observed. This evidence suggests that the board of directors is an important antecedent of TMT internationality. However, the results also hint that other strategic and environmental factors such as company internationalization affect TMT internationality as well. Finally, based on the results on the two variables nationality and international experience, it was concluded that these two dimensions of internationality are strongly connected and cannot be treated independently from one another.
