The Harp family has been traced back to the Midlands of England in the 16th century where the name was Earpe. Francis Earpe, born in 1560 in Nottinghamshire, England, was the earliest ancestor found. He is used as generation 1 in this book. By the 3rd generation, the last "e" had been dropped and records show the name as Earp.It wasn't until the 8th generation that the name was changed to Harp. The first immigrant to America was Thomas Earp, Jr. who came in the mid-late 1600's. After the 5th, 6th and 7th generations lived in Maryland and Virginia, Thomas moved to North Carolina in the mid 1700's and began using the spelling "Harp". His relatives who remained in Virginia or Maryland kept using "Earp". Later, one line changed the spelling to "Arp".The Harp's migrated similarly to other immigrant families as land and roads were opened. The Harp's moved from Virginia to North Carolina with the opening of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Trail. They moved from North Carolina to Kentucky and/or Tennessee in the early 1800's after opening of the Wilderness Road by Daniel Boone. By the 1830's, the Harp's had moved to Newton County, Arkansas. The Harp's then moved to Oklahoma in the early 1900's. By the mid-1900's, all of the Harps, except my wife's family, had moved to California .This book reports the results of genealogical research on the Earp/Harp families. The main discussion is of direct ancestors of Phyllis Harp, but also included interesting stories of other Harp descendants (from siblings of the direct ancestor), including the relationship with Wyatt Earp, Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton.DNA results support the relationships shown in the Family Tree, including that with Wyatt Earp, Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton.

When most people hear the name Earp, they think of Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan, and sometimes the lesser known James and Warren. They also had a half-brother named Newton, who lived a fairly quiet, uneventful life. While it’s true these men made history on their own, they all had a Mrs. Earp behind them—some more than one. The Earp men, starting with the patriarch of the Earp clan, Nicholas Porter Earp, did not like being alone. Nicholas Earp was married three times, with his last marriage being at the age of 80 his bride being 53. Three of his sons would follow their father’s lead and marry more than once. It’s also possible these Earp brothers had additional brides or lovers that have yet to be discovered! One could argue some of these women helped shape the future of the Earp brothers and may have even been the fuel behind some of the fires they encountered. This book collectively traces the lives of the women who shared the title of Mrs. Earp either by name or relationship. The name Earp has stirred up many a historical controversy over the years, from false photos to false accounts and so much more. With any history, there is bound to be controversy simply because it can be a jigsaw puzzle.
