Binnenvaart over de Zuiderzee is zeer belangrijk geweest voor de spectaculaire groei van de vroegmoderne Nederlandse economie (1550-1700). Dat concludeert promovendus Wouter Waldus. Hij heeft voor zijn promotie de vloot van de turfschipperij op de Zuiderzee goed onderbouwd berekend en vergeleken met andere sectoren. Daarnaast heeft hij de Zuiderzee als maritiem transportlandschap volledig in kaart gebracht: vaarroutes, markeringen, redes, etc.. Zo kon hij het unieke karakter van het binnenvaartnetwerk duidelijk maken. Waldus vond tijdens zijn onderzoek ook aanwijzingen voor gezinsbewoning aan boord van binnenschepen rond 1650, veel vroeger dan tot nu toe werd aangenomen.
This book deals with the introduction of a new type of “spatial measures" in flood governance. In contrast to traditional “safety measures" that aim to provide protection against floods by building structural flood defenses such as levees and flood walls, the goal of spatial measures is to reduce the exposure to flood risks by changing the spatial layout of flood-prone areas. By limiting developments and flood-proofing buildings in areas at risk to flooding, investments in structural flood defenses can be circumvented and vulnerabilities reduce. World-wide, spatial measures are gaining attractiveness as a response strategy to increasing flood risks caused by climate change and urbanization. The introduction of spatial measures in flood governance involves more than the simple development of new policies and laws. Research has demonstrated that the implementation of spatial measures can have huge implications for how costs and responsibilities are divided between different levels of governance and between public and private actors, changing the whole organization behind flood governance. Both for the effectiveness and for the legitimacy of spatial flood governance strategies, it is important that these distributive implications are well understood. This book describes the introduction of spatial measures in the context of two very different delta countries: the Netherlands and the United States. In the United States, a spatial flood governance strategy was already developed in de mid-20th century whereas in the Netherlands, a safety paradigm institutionalized over the course of the 20th century and spatial measures have only recently been introduced. By analyzing the science-policy interactions underlying the implementation of spatial measures in both countries, this book shows how under the influence of different types of experts (engineers in the Netherlands and social geographers in the United States) different spatial flood management strategies emerged with different distributive implications, each with its own challenges for effectiveness and legitimacy.
The structure and functioning of eutrophicated aquatic ecosystems has received considerable attention from limnologists as well as water managers in recent years. Stress has often been on pelagic food webs of deeper lakes whilst littoral systems or shallower lakes have been less thoroughly investigated. Since Dutch aquatic systems are shallow, as a rule, they form a notable exception. But here, too, the orientation was often on pelagic food webs. The present study has a clearly different scope in that it takes the water plant as prime perspective. The editors consider water plants to be the key component in shallow aquatic ecosystems. They have compiled work on one water plant species, Potamogeton pectinatus L., and from one lake, Lake Veluwe, as a typical case, and set out to explain the fluctuations in abundance of this water plant as influenced by eutrophication. A working hypothesis on the mechanism responsible for water plant decline during eutrophication was adopted and tested in a combination of field and laboratory work. A simulation model, SAGAI, for the water plant P.pectinatus was developed and proved to fit independent data very well. The work started out as a joint effort of a single project team in the Department of Nature Conservation of Wageningen Agricultural University, but the present volume has benefited considerably from the inputs of several invited colleagues, as the list of contributors witnesses. The editors have made an invaluable contribution to the understanding of shallow aquatic ecosystems and to their scientifically based and sustainable management.
This volume is devoted to the memory of the Dutch carcinologist Lipke Bijdeley Holthuis (1921-2008) who dedicated his life to the taxonomy and systematics of Crustacea. His scientific career started in 1941 with his first publications and continued for 68 years in which he produced over 600 titles totalling almost 13000 pages describing more than 400 taxa new to science. In this volume his friends and colleagues pay tribute to his legacy. Included are an extensive biography and over 50 papers mainly dealing with systematic and taxonomic issues, which emanate from his knowledge and inspiration.
For centuries, the Dutch landscape and her inhabitants have been connected to the water, sometimes lovingly, sometimes full of fear and often with awe. This is also reflected in the theme of this doctoral research: late medieval storm surges of the Zuiderzee on the one hand caused the loss of land and settlements in the heart of the Netherlands, while on the other hand these floods created new maritime trade routes that would eventually bring great wealth. The current research focuses more specifically on reconstructing (the development of) the landscape and habitation in the northeastern part of the Zuiderzee (the current Noordoostpolder) between approximately 1100 and 1400 AD. The research shows that in less than 500 years the research area transformed from unexplored and uninhabited peat areas with lakes into open sea, removing virtually all remnants of land reclamation, cultivation and habitation.
