Counter-Memories are memories that are barred from hegemonic history, but are, nevertheless present in cinematic forms. They have the potential to destabilise official narratives and normative orders of remembering. Due to the strategic and artistic interventions of a range of Iranian filmmakers, such as Abbas Kiarostami and Shahram Mokri, Ali Hatami and Tahmineh Milani, Kianoush Ayari and Rakshan Banietemad, the history of post-revolutionary Iranian Cinema is also structured by counter-memories, with the potential to destabilise officially fabricated success stories of revolution, war and sacred defence. 'Counter-Memories in Iranian Cinema' establishes a new framework for understanding the tensions between censorship and resistance, helping to carve out resistant points of remembering both within and outside state-controlled cinema.

"When Abbas Kiarostami suddenly passed away in July 2016, he was already an iconic figure in world cinema-and his reputation as a master filmmaker has only grown since. In this book, celebrated scholar Hamid Dabashi offers a new way of looking at Kiarostami's art world, one that questions the very idea of film philosophy. Dabashi's authoritative account of the philosophical resonances of Kiarostami's oeuvre offers an iconoclastic critique of the field's Eurocentrism and, in vivid prose, makes the case for a new method of appreciating the work of this essential figure. The result is a provocative perspective on the totality of Kiarostami's legacy that, with deep roots in Iranian aesthetic and Persian poetic and philosophical traditions, overcomes film's provincial preoccupation with its Western heritage and charts a new path forward for film philosophy."--

"Embodied Testimonies, Gendered Memories, and the Poetics of Trauma" is a collection of academic essays that uses mainstream and postcolonial trauma theory in the analysis of literary and artistic representations of traumatic history. This collection prioritizes historical and personal accounts from the perspectives of Iranian, Arab, Jewish, and Black women to highlight the ways in which gender, race, and religion shape experiences of trauma. By drawing attention to individual experiences of suffering — both visible and invisible — the authors reconsider the basis for collective and socio-political engagement. The book re-examines established postcolonial trauma theory, which can occasionally overemphasize the collectivity of traumatic experience and subsume individual stories under ideological nationalism. Each chapter in this collection explores methods of balancing the pain of the individual and the community through analyses of art, literature, and film. Together, these chapters demonstrate the importance of embracing a dynamic and diverse approach to the representation of trauma that makes marginalized survivors visible while also recognizing the complexities of gendered and racialized experiences of trauma.

Outlining his affinity with celebrated directors like Chantal Akerman and Abbas Kiarostami, as well as visual artists like Romuald Karmakar, the contributors firmly position Shahid Saless as a filmmaker who speaks forcefully to the traumas of displacement and migration.

Enghelab Street, or Revolution Street, is located in the center of the Iranian capital Tehran--a main artery in the city's cultural life with a host of bookshops. This book presents a variety of rarely seen photographic and propaganda books collected by Iranian-born, Paris-based artist Hannah Darabi (born 1981), drawing on works published between 1979 and 1983--years corresponding to the short period when freedom of speech prevailed at the end of the Shah's regime and the beginning of the Islamic government. Darabi takes us to the heart of an intense artistic and cultural period in Iranian history in a visual essay accompanied by a critical essay by Chowra Makaremi. With its revelatory landscape of publications, Enghelab Street gives us the opportunity to look at rare printed matter for the first time.
