Excerpt from Congregational History: 1200-1567 A brief explanation of the special object of the present volume is almost necessary to prepare the reader for its perusal. It must be understood at the outset that the history it contains is not so much that of a religious denomination as of the development of the principles denominated Congregational. Beginning with the darkest period of ecclesiastical history, my aim has been to show the gradual restoration of the Church as a divine institution to its primitive purity and simplicity. With the absolute dominion of the Papacy, the light of evangelical truth, if not extinguished, was greatly obscured. Manuscript copies of the Scriptures, nevertheless, were preserved, and in due time multiplied for more general circulation. The devout study of the Word of God called into existence various fraternities or religious associations, indicating a growing desire for the fellowship springing out of the sympathies sure to be enkindled by a common love of evangelical truth.
