Excerpt from Sidelights on Christian Doctrine The Studies in this Volume are based upon Addresses on Christian Doctrine given at various Conferences and Bible Schools in America. This may explain the semi-popular character of the exposition, and some peculiarities in the style, which it has not been thought necessary to remove. Perhaps the less formal nature of the Studies will adapt them better to the needs of those whom technical works on theology might repel. The treatment makes no pretence at exhaustiveness, but probably it will be found that few points of real importance in theological study are left untouched. The work may therefore serve as an introduction to more elaborate handbooks on the Christian doctrines. It may serve to show what, in substance, theology is, to create an interest in its questions, and to remove some misconceptions as to its nature, necessity, and scope. In some degree, it may even be a contribution to the right apprehension of the Christian truth itself. These are days in which theology is at a discount. The cry is loud for "reconstruction" of Christian doctrines; for re-statement in terms of living thought. This book has little to offer in the way of novelties. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God The work that was entrusted to me by the General Editors of the International Theological Library was simply the presentation of the conception of God that is characteristic of the Christian religion. I was not sent to search for God, but rather to report as well as I might what the Christian faith testifies concerning him. It has seemed to me that this single commission was enough for me to undertake, and I have attempted nothing more. No report of the literature of the subject will be found upon these pages, nor any quotation of other men's work, nor any controversy. It is the sole endeavour of the book to set forth the Christian doctrine of God for the present day: not the doctrine of the past, or of the future, but the thought of God that we may now entertain if we follow the leading of Jesus Christ the revealer. So far as I have the power, I have sought to be faithful both to the ancient light to the modern, and I have hoped that my presentation might bear reasonably well the tests of the present time. There are many ways of dealing with the vast and glorious theme, and certainly there must be room for a book that simply aims to show forth doctrine as Christian faith may receive it now. I have written in the full conviction that the light which Jesus Christ gives us upon God is the true light, and that God is such a Being as he inspires us to love and trust. Excerpt from A Manual of Christian Doctrine The usefulness Of theology is as little Open to dispute as its legitimacy. It is necessary, not to ordinary Christians, but to Christian teachers and advocates. It is neither necessary nor possible that every one should be a lawyer, doctor, engineer; but every one who aspires to one of these professions must have more than the empirical knowledge which suffices for ordinary life. Times like ours are the last in which Christian teachers can afford to dispense with accurate and complete knowledge. Excerpt from History of Christian Doctrine Several years have elapsed since I engaged to prepare this work. The unexpected delay in its publication is owing chiefly to the pressure of other and more imperative engagements. One reason for it, however, is the fact that, although the subject is one which I had long studied and on which I had given instruction to many successive classes, more time was required for the compo sition of the book than I had anticipated. This is partly for the reason that it appeared to me, for the present purpose, expedient to abandon for the most part the method which I had always fol lowed in my Lectures of arranging the matter under the heads of General and Special Doctrinal History. On this topic something more is said in the introductory chapter. This change Of plan has involved an entire recasting of the materials to be incorpo rated into this volume. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Man It is hardly necessary to remind the reader that almost every section and subsection of this book touches con troversial points, and that no two writers will agree on every detail of such a subject as this. I have spared no pains to secure accuracy of fact, but am very conscious, in other respects, of the limitations of this volume; some of these are due to the necessary limits of space, though far more to the demands the subject makes on both theological learning and Christian experience. Excerpt from Outlines of Christian Doctrine The present short treatise was at first planned in the form of a Commentary upon the Thirty-Nine Articles. As the work proceeded the author was led to think that a sketch of the main doctrines of the Faith might be more generally useful, which, while always keeping in view the great historic Confession of the Church of which he thanks God he is a son and presbyter, should omit some topics contained in it and deal with others in a way somewhat different from that of a commentary. The work makes not the least pretension either to originality or to fulness. It will have well served its purpose if in any degree it can stimulate its readers to personal study, and suggest lines for work and thought. The author humbly trusts that what he has written has been written "at the foot of the Cross." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer This is the first of a short series of books on the Great Christian Doctrines. There is, I believe, a widespread and earnest desire on the part of teachers of the Bible to do more than has lately been done for the teaching of Christian doctrine. The complaint that doctrine is dry is due to the way it is taught, even more than to the spirit of the age Anything is dry that is disorderly or unreal. In this volume the Doctrine of Prayer is presented in an orderly sequence, and contact with reality is maintained at every step by means of illustration or example. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Reconciliation is a term of wide scope and various applica tion, and it is hardly possible to conceive a life or a religion which should dispense with it. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. They may interpret it as physical in its origin when it is really ethical, or as the misapprehension of a moral order when it is really antagonism to a personal God, and in either case the reconciliation they seek will fail to give the peace of which they are in quest. Nevertheless, reconciliation and nothing else is what they want, and its place in religion is central and vital.
