James Thurber was the most original, influential and, less we should forget, funniest American humorist of the last century. Writing and drawing cartoons for the New Yorker magazine from it's beginnings in the 1930s, he steadily shaped his own unique comic universe: a world governed by absurd logic where the trivial anxieties of everyday life slowly grind down its resigned citizens. Thurber's tales, alternately related in bemused deadpan and bewildered rage and are always excruciatingly funny and occasionally quietly disturbing too. This brand new selection, the first in over 50 years, reassembles his finest work for a new generation brought up on David Lynch and Jerry Seinfeld and features all his famous obsessions: the battle of the sexes, animals, travel, the delusional and certifiably insane. His 'casuals', as he liked to call his short pieces, drift between out and out fiction and surreal memoir. Spanning his whole career, this collection includes all his classic writings and cartoons, 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', 'The Catbird Seat', 'The Seal in the Bedroom', and half-forgotten gems that may be new even to fully qualified Thurber fans.

First published in 1977, A History of Rhodesia is a history of the origins and course of modern European occupation of 'Southern Rhodesia', 'Rhodesia' as it has been termed since the old 'Northern Rhodesia' became independent under the name Zambia in 1963. Robert Blake describes the years of the Monomotapa; the Portuguese occupation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; the Ndebele kingdom of the nineteenth century; the advent of Cecil Rhodes and the establishment of the Chartered Company which ruled Rhodesia until 1922; the period Southern Rhodesia enjoyed a self-governing colony from 1923 to 1951; the years of the Central African Federation from 1953 to its dissolution in 1963; and finally the dramatic course of events which led to Ian Smith's government making a unilateral declaration of independence in 1965. The years since UDI are covered by a long epilogue that takes the story forward to the early months of 1977. Rhodesian history is a strange and intriguing compound of romance, idealism, courage, arrogance, avarice and accident. Rhodesia's story is not only that of economic, political, ideological and external forces which have shaped it--it is also that of the individuals who made--or failed to make decisions: Rhodes, Lobengula, Jameson, Lord Malvern, Roy Welensky, Garfield Todd, Joshua Nkomo, Ian Smith. Written with access to many collections of papers not normally available to historians, Robert Blake's book is a major contribution to the history of colonial and post-colonial Africa.

The prevalence of obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2, has been steadily increasing in the United States and worldwide. Increased body mass is associated with an increased incidence of a wide range of medical problems affecting virtually every organ system. Each five-point increase in BMI over 25 kg/m2 is associated with a 30% increase in mortality. Furthermore, obesity also significantly affects quality of life, social functioning, and monetary health. The management of obesity is complex, often requiring an amalgamation of medical, dietary and psychological regimens to successfully tackle this multidimensional disease. Respectively, bariatric surgery has been utilized as a modality to manage morbid obesity and meta-analyses have demonstrated the efficacy of bariatric surgery in treating severe obesity and its associated co-morbidities. An effect of this high utility benefit is reflected in an exponential increase in the the number of bariatric operations performed in the United States (an 804 percent increase from 1998 to 2004. Hence, there are thousands of individuals yearly who have undergone or are undergoing bariatric surgery to manage morbid obesity. This book, is intended to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the management of the bariatric surgical patient. All of the contributors have been carefully selected as they each represent key opinion leaders in their own specific discipline regarding the assessment of the bariatric patient and we hope that all the readers will get as much enjoyment in reading their contributions as we have had in preparing this seminal work.
