As part of its mandate, the Public Archives of Canada has accumulated many census records relating to the historical development of present-day Canada. Most nineteenth-century census records which have been colLected in their original form are located in the Government Archives Division with the records of Statistics Canada, Record Group 31. These records have been microfilmed as a conservation measure and as a means of facilitating their use. In addition, microfilmed copies of census records held in original form in the provincial archives of Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, along with some fragmentary returns from other locations have been obtained by the Public Archives of Canada to complete the records already in our processing; these films are in the custody of the Manuscript Division. The present catalogue is a revised and expanded edition, listing census returns available on microfilm from the Public Archives of Canada for the years 1666 to 1891.
