DOWNLOAD EBOOKTo eradicate poverty in all its dimensions is one of the greatest challenges humanity is facing. United Nations has given 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are to be achieved by 2030 and the first goal is to eradicate extreme poverty. This paper seeks to find out whether India can achieve Goal-1 by 2030 or will it fail to do so. The Indian government is following a development strategy which involves maintaining high growth rates as well as implementing social welfare programmes for the vulnerable section of the society nationwide. It is also keeping a track of the performance shown by the different States and the Union Territories in various SDGs through the SDG India Index. The paper also discusses the factors which might be responsible for the achievement of the goal in its due time and also shines a light on the determinants of the opposite situation. In order to avoid the latter situation, the Indian government would need to reduce unemployment, accelerate human resource development, make sure the people it is uplifting from poverty don't regress to being poor again, allocate more financial resources towards SDGs and improve SDG India Index from the qualitative aspect.
