Karyn is a fifty-year old woman who lived in denial whenever she sought love for fear of being broken by the harsh realities of her relationships. Instead of facing the truth, she portrays herself as a strong-willed and carefree child, teen, and woman, who repeatedly justify her actions in order to protect her fragile soul and cope with her circumstances. Karyn embraces counselling throughout marriage, parenthood, and relationships, albeit without support of her immediate community. Despite the stigma associated with seeking counselling, Karyn blossoms when she finds a safe place to vent and call stuff out for what it truly is, without judgment or hidden agendas. Finally, she is free to find the love she deserves, take the blinders off, be true to herself, and accept all of her weaknesses and shortcomings, so that she finally lives in the truth surrounding her.

It is increasingly rare to find writers working on such good quality romances, with all the good qualities of the Literary Genre. And here it comes, the Literary voice, straight from within the remote corners of Bahia, Brazil, somewhat surprising for its intensity and audacity. João Calazans Filho was made in Literature by Poetry, by which he developed his Literary vocation and extravagance. Verses of passion, verses of a word lover. From this passion, then, the novelist emerges, inexpectedly, able to rescue the tradition of the romance, so undeniable and so forgotten. His prose is vigorous and does not negate all the dramatic features of the novel genre: remarkable characters, vividness, personalized dialogs, with their own expressions; and well-designed narrative structure. Besides all these qualities, Calazans also rescues the scenarios of the cacao farms, of the prosperity and conflicts brought by the golden fruit of Bahia, in a kind of second cycle of that repeats the secular history. Nothing was changed as time went by, for from it, the truth emerges. That’s the way the talented, vigorous and intense novelist emerges. Trying to rescue his roots and culture, facing his fears and daring – revisiting the past is Always challenging. In the novel universe, Calazans came to stay.

Despite appearing in twenty-eight movies in little over a decade, Carole Landis (1919-1948) never quite became the major Hollywood star her onscreen presence should have afforded her. Although she acted in such enduring films as A Scandal in Paris and Moon over Miami, she was most often relegated to supporting roles. Even when she played the major role in a feature, as she did in The Powers Girl and the film noir Wake Up Screaming!, she was billed second or third behind other actors. This biography traces Landis's life, chronicling her beginnings as a dance hall entertainer in San Francisco, her career in Hollywood and abroad, her USO performances, and ultimately her suicide. Using interviews with actors who worked with Landis, contemporary movie magazines and journals, and correspondence, biographer Eric Gans reveals a tragic figure whose life was all too brief. Landis's big break came in 1940 with Hal Roach's One Million B.C. She appeared in thirteen Twentieth Century-Fox pictures between 1941 and 1946. In 1942-1943, Landis entertained troops in England and North Africa in the only all-female USO tour. The trip led to her memoir, Four Jills in a Jeep, and a Fox movie of the same title. After her last American film in 1947, she completed two projects in England while having an affair with married actor Rex Harrison. Tormented by a love that could not lead to matrimony and depressed about growing older, she took a fatal drug overdose on July 5, 1948.
