DOWNLOAD EBOOKWarfare being an integral component of human civilization, nations are generally defined by the role played by their Armed Forces in shaping history. The story of the Army has neither a beginning nor an end; one has to, therefore, choose a point in time to start it. This story begins in 1914. The history of soldiers from Haryana, who have served the Indian Armed Forces through the last century, is a gripping account replete with innumerable examples of bravery, self-sacrifice and love for the country. The 'ordinary' men from this small state have played a big role in protecting national dignity. Thus, they have created values that shall not get inundated by moods of the moment due to their timeless appeal. Doughty Indian soldiers epitomize this sentiment, more than anything else. Hopefully, the coming generations would honor them by emulating their example. This focused account of the regional history of a national phenomenon will be of interest to teachers, scholars, soldiers as well as to the defence welfare policymakers.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBorn in a traditional Indian middle-class family in 1921, Tapishwar Narain ("Tappy") Raina rose to the pinnacle of the Indian Army in 1975. A decorated and battle-hardened soldier, Tappy Raina proved also to be a visionary Army Chief. He pushed through ground-breaking initiatives both for making the Indian Army future-ready and for the welfare of its officers and men. Equally, his quiet but firm stand against the Indian Army being drawn into the maelstrom of Indian politics during the period of Emergency was a truly signal service to India’s democracy. Tappy Raina was pitched into the 2nd World War at the very outset of his army career and saw action in the Middle East, Burma and the Far East. During this period he was wounded and lost his right eye but never let this early setback affect him professionally. His finest hour as a soldier came during India’s war with China in 1962. Amidst the ruins elsewhere along the borders, Brigadier Raina won laurels as a battlefield commander in Ladakh, where Indian Army blunted the Chinese PLA in the battle of Chushul. For this exemplary military leadership, Tappy Raina was conferred the country’s second highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC). Later, for his contribution in the war against Pakistan in 1971, then Lt General Raina was conferred the award of Padma Bhushan. Not even sixty yet, General Raina passed away in 1980 with his boots on while serving in India’s High Commissioner in Canada. Interspersed in the book are notes by Tappy Raina’s wife, Ninette, which etch out some personal facets of his life and reveal his innate decency, modesty and compassion. General T. N. Raina’s was an inspiring life of outstanding service to the nation, embodying vision, professional excellence and courage.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe scope of this study of the Pakistan Army must be wide and in-depth, as the army has played a major part in the country’s history. The author describes Pakistan’s violent internal politics and erratic international relations with a deep knowledge gained through his long association with the country and its armed forces. Pakistan’s wars with India are covered vividly, drawing on unpublished material and details from Indian as well as Pakistani sources. The country’s resurrection under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is described, as is the decade of dictatorship that followed his time in power. The story of what occurred after this period of dominance, when Pakistan grappled with unaccustomed democracy and verged on anarchy, is told with the aid of the author’s personal knowledge of many of the senior players. This fifth edition incorporates new material covering crucial developments since 2014, including Operation Zarb-e-Azb in Waziristan. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
