Excerpt from Balsam Fir The same factors that control the geographical distribution of balsam fir influence to a great extent also its local occurrence. Maine, with an average summer temperature of only 625° F., an average winter temperature of 20° F., and a mean annual rainfall of 43 inches, presents most favorable conditions for the tree's growth, and, indeed, here balsam fir is in general more thrifty than in any other State ih which it occurs. This is shown in every way - ih the greater height, larger diameter, greater clear length, more cylindrical shape of the trunk, and the smoother appearance of the bark, indicating a more rapid growth. The forest types in which balsam fir occurs in Maine, as well as throughout northern New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont, may be classified as swamp, flat, hardwood slope, and mountain top. Excerpt from Balsam Fir in Minnesota: A Summary of Present Knowledge Balsam fir (abies balsamea), considered an inferior tree a few years back, is becoming of greater and greater importance in the forest economy of northern Minnesota. There are two reasons for this changing situation. One is the constantly expanding'use of this species by the paper industry as a substitute for the increasingly scarce spruce. The other is the large area of balsam fir forest which is gradually developing. The Forest Survey showed acres of spruce - fir forest (predominantly balsam fir) in.minnesota in 193. Excerpt from Direct Seeding and Planting of Balsam Fir in Northern Wisconsin Because of the aggressiveness of balsam fir in natural seeding in sites occupied by aspen, paper birch, and brush, artificial direct seeding would seem to have some promise. For many years, direct seeding in the field has held the interest of foresters not only in the Lake States, but also in other regions. To date, the results in the Lake States have not been encouraging. There have been many more failures than successes. However, because of the short cut that direct seeding offers, eliminating the time and expense of raising and planting seedlings, it is an attractive field for re search. To date, very little research has been done in the Lake States on seed ing and planting of balsam fir; however, a number of field trials have been made in northern Wisconsin. The results of these trials are pre sented in this paper. Each test is dealt with separately because they were conducted under varying conditions and direct comparison or summa tion of data is not possible. The Summary. However, draws the results together and presents overall conclusions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Balsam Fir Dimension Lumber in Selected Minnesota Markets As discussed previously, the following techniques are thought to be necessary to make balsam fir studs widely acceptable in mid-western metropolitan markets: kiln dry ing, precision end-trimming (pet), eased edge (ee), end waxing or painting, grade stamping, and branding with a trade name. Grading and grade stamping are essen tial. Federal Housing Administration regula tions require that lumber used under their jurisdiction must be grade stamped under rules of an accredited association, such as the Northern Hardwood and Pine Manufacturers Association, Green Bay, Wis, or the Western Wood Products Association, Portland, Ore. If the material is to compete in metropolitan markets compliance with fha regulations Would appear to be an absolute necessity. Over a period of years, repeated and severe needle damage can reduce tree growth, cause bud and branch mortality on the lower portion of the tree, and even kill small seedlings. This damage decreases the quality of Christmas trees and makes boughs unusable for wreath-making. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
