The reprint covers only a relatively short number of the years that this publication was issued. Travers' retrospective makes clear that the journal had its start in 1929 when Pacific Coast Architect (est. 1911) and California Southland (est. 1918) merged to form California Arts & architecture. The publication continued under that title until Sept. 1943, when the word California began to appear only intermittently in the masthead, until it was finally dropped for good in Feb. 1944. This manifestation of the journal was issued monthly from v. 61, no. 1 (Jan. 1944) through v. 84, no. 7/8 (July/Aug. 1967). According to Travers, John Entenza, the publisher during most of this period (1943-1962), changed the nature of the journal from that of a "review of 'nostalgic historicism' ... to an avant-garde magazine publishing low-cost houses rich with social concern". One of the prominent features of this publication was the "Case study house program", an idea that was first announced in the Jan. 1945 issue, which begins this set.
