Swansea, South Wales, was largely destroyed during the bombings of World War II. But life went on as the city filled with British, Canadian, and then American soldiers. Dances were held at Mumbles Pier and the Brangwyn Hall. Friendships and romances began and ended. The letters written by Mary to her American soldier give the reader a glimpse into the life of a young woman in love with a stranger during wartime. Although intended only for her soldier, through her letters we get to know a family with sons away at war and children still in school. We learn of engagements and weddings. We're treated to delicious neighborhood gossip. We learn of relatives and friends who come and go to the house in Manselton Road. Mary also shares the songs she loves and the films she sees with her friends and her mother. And of course, we are witnesses to the love affair between Mary and her soldier, a relationship challenged not only by war. These letters express the intimate hopes of a young woman and the enduring life of a city. Through these letters we are able to appreciate a generation of young people establishing relationships and their own identities in a time of war.

On odd days, Tripp uses a school practice room to let loose on a borrowed guitar. Eyes closed, strumming that beat-up instrument, Tripp escapes to a world where only the music matters. On even days, Lyla Marks uses the same practice room. To Tripp, she's trying to become even more perfect—she's already a straight-A student and an award-winning cellist. But when Lyla begins leaving notes for him in between the strings of the guitar, his life intersects with hers in a way he never expected. What starts as a series of snippy notes quickly blossoms into the sharing of interests and secrets and dreams, and the forging of a very unlikely friendship. Challenging each other to write songs, they begin to connect, even though circumstances threaten to tear them apart. From beloved author Mary Amato comes a YA novel of wit and wisdom, both heartfelt and heartbreaking, about the power of music and the unexpected chords that draw us together.

Mary J. Blige is an icon who represents the political consciousness of hip hop and the historical promise of soul. She is an everywoman, celebrated by Oprah Winfrey and beloved by pop music fans of all ages and races. Blige has sold over fifty million albums, won numerous Grammys, and even played at multiple White House events, as well as the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Displaying astonishing range and versatility, she has recorded everything from Broadway standards to Led Zeppelin anthems and worked with some of popular music’s greatest artists—Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Whitney Houston, Sting, U2, and Beyoncé, among them. Real Love, No Drama: The Music of Mary J. Blige tells the story of one of the most important artists in pop music history. Danny Alexander follows the whole arc of Blige’s career, from her first album, which heralded the birth of “hip hop soul,” to her critically praised 2014 album, The London Sessions. He highlights the fact that Blige was part of the historically unprecedented movement of black women onto pop radio and explores how she and other women took control of their careers and used their music to give voice to women’s (and men’s) everyday struggles and dreams. This book adds immensely to the story of both black women artists and artists rooted in hip hop and pays tribute to a musician who, by expanding her reach and asking tough questions about how music can and should evolve, has proven herself an artistic visionary.

"A handbook for compassion... a Must-Read Music Book.” —Rolling Stone Country "Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." —Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True "Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” —Amy Ray, Indigo Girls From the Grammy nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

The Padgett Messages introduce the reader to soulful teachings of Divine Love & spirit communications received by James E. Padgett. The Padgett Messages introduce many spirit related matters such as soulmates, insight into the afterlife, spirit guides, the soul of mortal man and realm of spirits. The teachings of Divine Love are the essence of these messages and apply to the individual on their soul journey. James Padgett received these messages from spirits and Celestial spirits through his gift of mediumship of automatic handwriting. The inspiration for James to commence receiving messages from spirits was to communicate with his wife Helen who had passed into the afterlife. Dr. Stone and Eugene Morgan assisted James in this work during 1914-1920. The message of Divine Love is as relevant today as are the Celestial spirits who conveyed these messages with James Padgett. Communication with spirit inspires many to seek information which may illuminate their spiritual journey.
