The more common formulae are given without any attempt to explain the laws or premises upon which they are based; a few examples are worked out in order to show the actual or relative values of the terms entering into them, and to compare the results with those used in practice. I do not do this either to ignore or underrate the value or importance of theoretical investigations; if the formulae deduced in themselves do not have practical value, they incidentally lead to comparisons with actual results, and induce the publication of a large mass of more or less accurate records of observed facts.
