The Mevlidi Sherif is one of the most commonly recited poems in the world today. Composed by the esteemed scholar and poet Süleyman Chelebi in the 14th century, this masterpiece of Turkish literature elegantly conveys the birth-story of the Prophet Muhammad, interweaving both the physical and spiritual dimensions of this narrative, gracefully reviving faith in the hearts of all who are privileged enough to listen. Venerated for over 600 years by the Muslims of Anatolia and the Balkans regardless of devotion, this classic poem continues to lend its treasures almost every day, both at times of festivity and sorrow. For some, it is celebrating the love of the Prophet, a source of inspiration and wisdom, while for others it is one of the few religious experiences connecting them to their Ottoman heritage, culture and identity. This edition features the only known English translation written almost a century ago, and is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the sacred nativity of the Prophet Muhammad and the origins of His noble legacy. “The fact that the Mevlidi Sherif, as the finest expression of reverence for Muhammed, forms an essential part in the religious pattern of most Turkish minds, and that from its striking pictures and musical lines many Turks draw a large part of their stock of religious ideas, may give this poem interest and significance even for many who have little direct contact with the world of Islam. Remembering what the music of Christmas carols means to the Western world may help to an understanding of what the Turk experiences as he listens to the music of Süleyman Chelebi’s Mevlidi Sherif.” — F. An analysis of a variety of early Islamic texts to understand processes of identity formation and community In Shurat Legends, Ibadi Identities, Adam Gaiser explores the origins and early development of Islamic notions of martyrdom and of martyrdom literature. He examines the catalogs or lists of martyrs (martyrologies) of the early shur?t (Kh?rijites) in the context of late antiquity, showing that shur?t literature, as it can be reconstructed, shares continuity with the martyrologies of earlier Christians and other religious groups, especially in Iraq, and that this powerful literature was transmitted by seventh century shur?t through their successors, the Ib??iyya. Gaiser examines the sources of poems and narratives as quasi-historical accounts and their application in literary creations designed to meet particular communal needs, in particular, the need to establish and shape identity. Gaiser shows how these accounts accumulated traits—such as all-night prayer vigils, stoic acceptance of death, and miracles—-of a wider ascetic and apocalyptic literature in the eighth century, including martyrdom narratives of Eastern Christianity. By establishing focal points of piety around which a communal identity could be fashioned, such accounts proved suitable for use in missionary activity in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Gaiser also documents the reshaping of these narratives for more quietist purposes: emphasizing moderated rather than violent action, diplomacy, and respect for other Islamic sects as also being monotheistic, rather than condemning them as sinful. Along with refashioning narratives, Gaiser details the Ib??? efforts to compile collections into genealogies, both biographical dictionaries and lineages of the true faith linking individuals and communities to local saints and martyrs. He also shows how this more nuanced history led to the formation of rules and authorities governing the shur?t. Employing rarely examined manuscript materials to shed light on such processes as identity formation and communal boundary maintenance, Gaiser traces the course by which this martyrdom literature and its potentially dangerous implications came to be institutionalized, contained, and controlled.

"Once celebrated in the Western media as a shining example of a 'liberal' and 'tolerant' Islam, Indonesia since the end of the Soeharto regime (May 1998) has witnessed a variety of developments that bespeak a conservative turn in the country's Muslim politics. In this timely collection of original essays, Martin van Bruinessen, our most distinguished senior Western scholar of Indonesian Islam, and four leading Indonesian Muslim scholars explore and explain these developments. Each chapter examines recent trends from a strategic institutional perch: the Council of Indonesian Muslim scholars, the reformist Muhammadiyah, South Sulawesi's Committee for the Implementation of Islamic Shari'a, and radical Islamism in Solo. With van Bruinessen's brilliantly synthetic introduction and conclusion, these essays shed a bright light on what Indonesian Muslim politics was and where it seems to be going. The analysis is complex and by no means uniformly dire. For readers interested in Indonesian Muslim politics, and for analysts interested in the dialectical interplay of progressive and conservative Islam, this book is fascinating and essential reading." -Robert Hefner, Director Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs, Boston University
