Magazine Advertising in Life during World War II: Patriotism through Service, Thrift, and Utility is a descriptive analysis that examines how the cultural values of service, thrift, and utility were framed in advertisements in Life magazine from 1942 to 1945.These cultural values were used by advertisers to create citizen consumers who practiced frugal consumption of advertised products and services to demonstrate their patriotism and fulfill their perceived civic duties. Patriotism through service, thrift, and utility was not limited to citizen consumers, but was also used in the advertisements to highlight the contributions of manufacturers to the total war effort. The advertisements were able to support the war and reinforce the American way of life and its consumer culture by framing service, thrift, and utility in relation to patriotism and consumption. More so than any war in history, World War II was a woman’s war. Women, motivated by patriotism, the opportunity for new experiences, and the desire to serve, participated widely in the global conflict. Within the Allied countries, women of all ages proved to be invaluable in the fight for victory. Rosie the Riveter became the most enduring image of women’s involvement in World War II. Web 2.0 and the Political Mobilization of College Students investigates how college students’ online activities, when politically oriented, can affect their political participatory patterns offline. Kenneth W. Moffett and Laurie L. Rice find that online forms of political participation—like friending or following candidates and groups as well as blogging or tweeting about politics—draw in a broader swathe of young adults than might ordinarily participate. Political scientists have traditionally determined that participatory patterns among the general public hold less sway in shaping civic activity among college students. This book, however, recognizes that young adults’ political participation requires looking at their online activities and the ways in which these help mobilize young adults to participate via other forms.
