With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers’ bestseller for 10 years! Thirty years in New York City’s public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto’s "guerrilla teaching." John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. His other titles include A Different Kind of Teacher (Berkeley Hills Books, 2001) and The Underground History of American Education (Oxford Village Press, 2000).

John Taylor Wood, the grandson of President Zachary Taylor and a nephew of Jefferson Davis, was one of the most daring and remarkable participants of the Civil War and among the few people to hold dual rank in the Confederate military as a captain in the Confederate States Navy (CSN) and a colonel in the cavalry. Wood was widely known for his wartime activities, but at the time of his death in 1904, he had been largely forgotten. This work combines a thorough biography of John Taylor Wood and three of his memoirs that were published in Century magazine between 1885 and 1898. The biography gives special attention to Wood's childhood and youth, such as his harrowing experiences in Florida during the Seminole Wars, his service in the United States Navy during and after the Mexican War, his experiences in California during the Gold Rush and his leading role among the members of the little-known postwar Confederate naval colony in Halifax, Nova Scotia, organized to fight the Fenian forces for the British in 1866. His writings about the war and other literary activities, and his friendship with William Hall, the first African American to win the Victoria Cross are covered. The memoirs in this book cover his service on the CSS Virginia, the cruise of the CSS Tallahassee (of which he was the commander), and his gutsy escape from the South as the Confederacy collapsed.

Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. "For some thirty years, John Taylor has been diving as a critic into the torrents of modern European poetry; that is, into the different national literatures which, in addition, have accepted as their own kin some of the best American poetic voices, such as those of Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, or Wallace Stevens. John Taylor is very familiar with the rich aquatic life of these European rivers; in fact, he is one of the best-informed connoisseurs of what is going on in continental poetry, with all its lively diversity. But his critical books, which show his attentive, empathic reading of work written by others in the various hearts of European poetry France or Germany, Italy or Serbia, Greece or Slovenia, or the more northern countries are not the topic of this introduction. This introduction is about his own poetic prose, which relates his early childhood in the American Midwest. Yet in their stylistic techniques and symbolic depths, his writings indeed subtly reflect certain kinds of European poetics." Veno Taufer"

The most authoritative book on the subject. John Taylor was the last professional ivory hunter in East Africa, a legend in his own time. He probably knew more about ammunition and rifles for African game than any other hunter, and he cites his own experiences in the wilds to defend his arguments about which rifle is the best to use on big game. He covers rifles and calibers for elephant, rhino, hippo, buffalo, and lion. Also covered: safeties; single vs. double trigger; double rifles; ballistics tables; sights; the .375 H&H; the "all-round" rifle; small-, medium-, and large-bore rifles; and much more. He tells great stories and gives the best advice available. By popular demand, this sought-after classic is now reprinted by Safari Press.
