DOWNLOAD EBOOKGeorge Washington (1732 - 1799) was a military general, statesman, and American political leader. He led the Patriot forces to victory in the American War for Independence. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, presided at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where the U.S. Constitution was established, and he served as the first president of the United States from 1789 - 1797. This extensive collection of quotes made by George Washington during his life time, span from before, during and after the War of Independence as well as during his time as American President. Also included are the delightful 110 'Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation', which he copied when he was sixteen as a handwriting exercise. They were originally derived from a list of ideals compiled by French Jesuits in 1590, and translated into English in 1640 by Francis Hawkins.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKGeorge Washington Carver (1864-1943), best known for his work as a scientist and a botanist, was an anomaly in his own time—a black man praised by white America. This selection of his letters and other writings reveals both the human side of Carver and the forces that shaped his creative genius. They show us a Carver who was both manipulated and manipulative who had inner tensions and anxieties. But perhaps more than anything else, these letters allow us to see Carver's deep love for his fellow man, whether manifested in his efforts to treat polio victims in the 1930s or in his incredibly intense and emotionally charged friendships that lasted a lifetime. The editor has furnished commentary between letters to set them in context.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn an era of incivility, discover a timeless guide to good manners from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. “The basis of all good human behavior is kindness,” says Eleanor Roosevelt in this classic handbook, first published in 1962 as a “modern book of etiquette for modern Americans.” As a politician, diplomat, and activist, as well as the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Roosevelt knew that thoughtful, civil behavior was essential to peaceful, productive relationships. In this etiquette guide, she teaches that decorum is not about strict adherence to formal rules; it is about approaching all social situations with consideration for others. She advises, “If ever you find yourself in a situation in which following a formal rule would be manifestly unkind, forget it, and be kind instead.” Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, Roosevelt covers a broad range of topics, including business dealings and family affairs, writing letters and receiving guests, and entertaining at home and traveling abroad. Beginning with the necessity of good manners between husband and wife, she considers the importance of courtesy in society at large and the role all Americans play as ambassadors of democracy while visiting foreign countries. In an era of incivility, Eleanor Roosevelt’s Book of Common Sense Etiquette is more relevant than ever. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.
