Excerpt from Why Is Christianity True? Christian Evidences Many believers and many more would-be believers in Christianity are staggered by the assumptions and sometimes by the reasoned conclusions of current science or philosophy. The need is great for a restatement of the grounds of our Christian belief. Indeed, in recent years numerous works on the subject have appeared. In Great Britain especially many valuable manuals have been published. Of the more recent and extended works in English those of Professors Fisher and Bruce stand in the front rank. Both of them are exceedingly valuable as general treatises. Other works not so elaborate have done admirable service. Among these may be named Mr. Ballard's vigorous book entitled The Miracles of Unbelief, in which he deals many a stalwart blow by means of a single conception consistently applied, at all points of the attack upon Christian belief. Mr. Robertson Nicoll's The Church's One Foundation states with great clearness and force the real issues raised by recent destructive critical theories. Some writers on the evidences of Christianity, however, surrender so much that their productions seem to be books on Christian evidences with Christianity left out. Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The author of this vigorous treatise is an estimable minister of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He bears the honored name of Beverly Waugh, late Bishop in the M. E. Church - a warm and life-long friend of the Bond connection, in Maryland, to which the author belongs. It may well be supposed, therefore, that he was steeped in Methodism from his birth; and if Methodism is "Christianity in earnest," as Dr. Chalmers says, an earnest defense of Christianity may be expected in this work. The reader will not be disappointed. The conception of the book originated in the author's careful perusal and study of the best works on the Evidences of Christianity - Paley, of course, being prominent. Encouraged by judicious friends, he prosecuted his investigations, and committed his views to writing, until they were developed into a well-proportioned treatise of sufficient size, and, we will add, of due importance, to justify its publication. We have had the pleasure and profit of its perusal as it has been passing through the press, and we hesitate not to say it is an excellent resume of the Evidences of Christianity, as presented by Paley, Row, and other apologists, embodying much fresh original matter adapted to the "perilous times" in which we live. Excerpt from Scientific Aspects of Christian Evidences Among well-founded beliefs, Christianity is not peculiar in being incapable of demonstrative proof and in being open to a variety of objections which are difficult to answer. Of the misleading tendencies in modern thought, one of the most serious is that of setting up an unreasonable standard of proof as the necessary basis for active belief. Indeed, in a vast number of instances, the insistence upon experimental or demonstrative proof is so unreasonable that it amounts to a species of insanity. Many who yield themselves to this tendency come to distrust ordinary evidence just as a certain class of insane persons do their best friends. Their condition of mind is like that of those who are so afraid of poison that it is with the utmost difficulty that they are persuaded that anything is free from it, while life is too short to admit of a preliminary mathematical demonstration of the fact. Excerpt from Central Evidences of Christianity It will be granted, to begin with, that these conceptions of a human life, actually realizing perfection, nay, embracing an incarnation of God, and thus affording a complete and divinely sanc tioned remedy for moral and spiritual evil, are the most remarkable, simply as conceptions, in all literature. The mere statement of them is enough to relieve us from the charge of vagueness and generality when we speak of the life, character, and work of Christ; we can therefore proceed to the argument of this tract, and show first that these are not mere conceptions, however great, but facts of a true and solid history; and then that all Christian evidence becomes, by this proof, strong with a new strength, and bright with a new light. Excerpt from A View of the Internal Evidence of the Christian Religion OF the following treatise Dr. Paley says, in his incomparable work on the evidences of Christianity, I should willingly, if the limits and nature of my work admitted of it, tran scribe into this chapter the whole of what has been said upon the morality of the gospel by the author of 'a View of the Internal Evi dence of Christianity 3' because it perfectly agrees with my own Opinion, and because it is impossible to say the same things so well.
