Since we humans have evolved into the dominant species on this planet, we sometimes fail to recognize--and respect--the ever-present threat posed by the animals we love or fear, hunt or fight to protect. Many of nature's most lethal residents have combative skills that have been honed by millions of years of adaptive survival, and it takes only a second for an otherwise evolved individual to become a helpless victim. WHEN MAN IS THE PREY is a one-of-a-kind collection of real-life encounters between man and beast that explores the uneasy relationship that humanity has with its native habitat. From bears, boars, and black dogs to swimming with sharks and dancing with wolves, the stories in WHEN MAN IS THE PREY offer a fascinating, frightening, and enlightening look at the natural world and its many creatures.

Man the Hunted argues that primates, including the earliest members of the human family, have evolved as the prey of any number of predators, including wild cats and dogs, hyenas, snakes, crocodiles, and even birds. The authors' studies of predators on monkeys and apes are supplemented here with the observations of naturalists in the field and revealing interpretations of the fossil record. Eyewitness accounts of the 'man the hunted' drama being played out even now give vivid evidence of its prehistoric significance. This provocative view of human evolution suggests that countless adaptations that have allowed our species to survive (from larger brains to speech), stem from a considerably more vulnerable position on the food chain than we might like to imagine. The myth of early humans as fearless hunters dominating the earth obscures our origins as just one of many species that had to be cautious, depend on other group members, communicate danger, and come to terms with being merely one cog in the complex cycle of life.

No one knew who he was or where he came from, but someone was doing what the police had tried in vain for over a year and finished the job within 24 hours. There was a new predator in town and he had a taste for killers. Lucas Davenport investigates a vitriolic blog that seems to be targeting the children of U.S. politicians in the latest thriller by #1 New York Times-bestselling author John Sandford. The daughter of a U.S. Senator is monitoring her social media presence when she finds a picture of herself on a strange blog. And there are other pictures . . . of the children of other influential Washington politicians, walking or standing outside their schools, each identified by name. Surrounding the photos are texts of vicious political rants from a motley variety of radical groups. It's obviously alarming--is there an unstable extremist tracking the loved ones of powerful politicians with deadly intent? But when the FBI is called in, there isn't much the feds can do. The anonymous photographer can't be pinned down to one location or IP address, and more importantly, at least to the paper-processing bureaucrats, no crime has actually been committed. With nowhere else to turn, influential Senators decide to call in someone who can operate outside the FBI's constraints: Lucas Davenport.

This collection of poetry is a story of my life and of changes that have contributed toward what I am today. The poetry ranges from love poems, spiritual aspirations, gothic and abstract pieces, and narratives. It is a collection of how an autistic sees the world, as if looking out the window at the world yet never able to join. This book contains controversial subjects and profanity, as censorship of language goes against free expression. This book contains a variety of poems and short stories that has influenced my life as well as shows the particular torment a person living with PSTD has. I wanted to show the world what looking at the world through my lenses is like, and I am sure there are countless others who prefer a realistic approach as opposed to ignoring the hardships this world thrusts on people. A unique perspective of life. I also hope to make aware to people the dangers of religion and how religion can be controlling. There is a section of poetry from my Christian days that I have kept for the sake of art. These are from experiences in living in fear of Christian brimstone preaching. A lot of that fear underlies my earlier work as well as a deep, relenting anger at the oppressor that I feared, which was religion. Regardless, I would love to discuss the role of religion in peoples lives and determine how we can live in a society that practices spirituality as opposed to strict rules that are open to interpretation. Traditions are something I have come to hate, a disussion of which can be found in the latter portion of the book. Finally, it is my hope that my creative writing might inspire further creativity and expression of personal experience. I wish to share my art and have an intellectual experience that opens a persons mind to a bigger universe than they have perceived.
