NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the Booker Prize–winning author of Lincoln in the Bardo and Tenth of December comes a literary master class on what makes great stories work and what they can tell us about ourselves—and our world today. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/DIAMONSTEIN-SPIELVOGEL AWARD • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, NPR, Time, San Francisco Chronicle, Esquire, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Town & Country, The Rumpus, Electric Lit, Thrillist, BookPage • “[A] worship song to writers and readers.”—Oprah Daily For the last twenty years, George Saunders has been teaching a class on the Russian short story to his MFA students at Syracuse University. In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it’s more relevant than ever in these turbulent times. In his introduction, Saunders writes, “We’re going to enter seven fastidiously constructed scale models of the world, made for a specific purpose that our time maybe doesn’t fully endorse but that these writers accepted implicitly as the aim of art—namely, to ask the big questions, questions like, How are we supposed to be living down here? What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyway, and how might we recognize it?” He approaches the stories technically yet accessibly, and through them explains how narrative functions; why we stay immersed in a story and why we resist it; and the bedrock virtues a writer must foster. The process of writing, Saunders reminds us, is a technical craft, but also a way of training oneself to see the world with new openness and curiosity. A Swim in a Pond in the Rain is a deep exploration not just of how great writing works but of how the mind itself works while reading, and of how the reading and writing of stories make genuine connection possible.

For anyone who loves great literature -- or aspires to write it -- this is an essential collection, full of insight, wisdom, humour, and candour from Canada's most important and beloved literary figures. For the past twenty-five years, the Writers' Trust of Canada's annual lecture series, the Margaret Laurence Memorial Lecture, has invited some of Canada's most prominent authors to discuss the theme of "A Writer's Life" in front of their peers. Hugh MacLennan, Mavis Gallant, Timothy Findley, W.O. Mitchell, Pierre Berton, P.K. Page, Dorothy Livesay, Alistair MacLeod, and Margaret Atwood, among others, have shared the personal challenges they faced in forging their own paths as writers, at a time when such a career was still unusual in this country. Intimate, frank, and revealing in tone, their lectures -- collected for the first time in celebration of the series' twenty-fifth anniversary -- provide a unique account of a period when a national writing community was just being formed, and give us unprecedented access to the heroes and heroines of Canadian literature as they share their insights into their work, the profession of writing, the growing canon of our literature, and the cultural history of our country.

When I began my writer's life officially, in 2010, a goal took form in my mind about where I wanted it to go. Writing one hundred books over the next ten years seemed like a reasonable venture, so I began. Eight years later, two years ahead of schedule, I have achieved this publishing-writing goal. It is now time to re-evaluate the progress that this means to me. This book, "The Writer's Life," is my effort to put this all in perspective, or retrospective, and look at the next ten years, for what to expect. In my writing so far, I have taken the roles of: Storyteller, Poet, Psychologist and Mystic. Each of the 100 books was written in one of these four voices. As you read this book you will recognize these four voices, or categories of endeavor. The writing style is journal-like, personal and spontaneous. It is filled with insights gained over a life dedicated to the written word. An appendix or Postscript will give an overview of all my published works to date, and put them in context. My immediate goal in this project of "The Writer's Life, ' is to promote and develop the body of work so far produced. There are three avenues for this task: a local group here at the Lake Community. A course in Writing/Publishing at the adult education center, and expanded promotional effort with my website, Creative-Publications.com. Over the past ten years, my book sales have gone from 50 books sold a month, or just less than two a day, to as high as 100 books sold a day in the month of September, 2015. That was when the Sam Ogden Mountain Man Series was fresh and going like wildfire. Somewhere in between those two extremes, is what would feel reasonable. But, writing in series format has been the best way to engage readers to follow my works. This book, "The Writer's Life," will serve as a template for my future outreach, my promotional work. It will begin with my Website, doing updates and refinements. From there, creating a group with the Lake Community, with the same basic agenda, set forth in the present small volume. This same template will serve as coursework for the local adult education program, to put together a short writing course through their marketing. The purpose of these marketing plans will be to eventually establish a program for writing and journal work. This will help promote personal growth and excitement during the years of retirement.I anticipate doing this same process of reflection ten years into the future, hopefully looking back from another writing milestone!
