"It is hard to say which makes for the more compelling narrative: the life of jazz great Jelly Roll Morton or the detective work that Phil Pastras undertook in putting together this engaging book. Dead Man Blues tells both these tales admirably, drawing on a treasure-trove of previously unknown material. It is both an important contribution to jazz scholarship and a fascinating piece of storytelling."—Ted Gioia, author of The History of Jazz and West Coast Jazz "Meticulously researched, including primary source material recently uncovered by the author, Dead Man Blues is not only a masterfully written, definitive account of Jelly Roll Morton's west coast years, but also a penetrating psychological and social study of the man and the forces that drove and shaped him."—Steve Isoardi, co-author of Central Avenue Sounds "A must-read for all jazz aficionados."—Gerald Wilson "One of the best books ever written about Jelly Roll Morton."—Gerald Wiggins, jazz pianist

Arizona Way Out West & Witty: Library Edition's target audience is grade-school children; yet, it is as appealing to adults as it is to kids! Highlights of Arizona's history are punctuated with true but gross, humorous, interesting and witty stories and facts about the Grand Canyon State. In addition to all the important stuff about Arizona, readers learn: What Geronimo and yawning have in common, What a glass eye has to do with Phoenix being Arizona's state capital, How many teachers it would take standing head-to-toe to go from the bottom to the top of the Grand Canyon and much, much more! But it takes more than amusing writing and fascinating facts to keep children's attention, so AZWOWW's award-winning creative team added recipes, crafts, games and science to the mix. Arizona Way Out West & Witty: Librarian Edition's activities do not tempt children to write or mark in the book -- there are no coloring pages or fill-in-the-blanks. This library edition, which was designated an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission includes a complete curriculum kit. Winner of ONEBOOKAZ for Kids 2012.

In 1862, a British lord named Viscount Milton and his friend from Cambridge, Dr. Cheadle, set out to travel across what is now western Canada. Not only did they want to explore the possibilities of a usable land-route through the Rockies to the Cariboo goldfields, but they craved the adventure an untouched land could provide. Starting their journey in the Red River Colony (Winnipeg), they hired guides and proceeded across the prairie, encountering both Natives and Hudson's Bay Company traders, and enduring a gruelling journey through the Yellowhead Pass, in terrible conditions, down the Thompson River to Kamloops. They moved down the Fraser River from the B.C. interior to New Westminster and took a steamer to Victoria, from which they visited the Cariboo goldfields, and then headed home from Victoria by ship via Panama. Their book about the trip, "The North-West Passage by Land," published in England in 1865, was a huge success. Now Michael Shaw Bond - a great-great-grandson of Viscount Milton, and a London journalist - has also travelled from Winnipeg west in the footsteps of his distinguished ancestor. Hitch-hiking and walking across the prairies, searching near Prince Albert for the descendants of the natives who helped Milton and Cheadle survive their first winter, and encountering both grandeur and extreme discomfort on horseback through the mountains, Bond tackles his experience with curiosity, good humour, and a good deal of Milton's own courage. In the process he discovers not only Milton's trail, but much about Milton - and himself. On his Canadian adventure Milton was able to escape the pressures and expectations of his position, and come to an awareness of what he did well. So too did Bond, dealing with a difficult relationship and a time of uncertainty in his life, find in his adventure a time in which life is reduced to essentials, and priorities are clarified - through the centuries the reward of pilgrimage.
