Water pollution is by necessity an interdisciplinary field involving scientists and professionals with a wide range of expertise. It also transcends national borders, since the contamination of water resources is a problem of global concern. The International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Prevention of Water Pollution, held biennially in different locations around the world, has been providing a forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest developments in the field since 1991. The papers in this volume present some of the latest results in this important field; work which is essential to understanding the nature of the problem and for proposing appropriate solutions, which may eventually provide the guidelines required to take steps towards the remediation or recovery of water resources.Water Pollution XI contains papers presented at the latest (Eleventh) Conference and includes the following topics: Water quality; Groundwater and aquifer issues; Environmental monitoring and control; Remediation; Pollution prevention; Lakes and rivers; Agricultural contamination; Wastewater treatment and management; Offshore pollution and oil spills; Emerging technologies; Biosensors; Health risk studies; Nano-particles; Socio-economic costs; Biosystems; Education and training.

This book describes the huge efforts by the Chinese Government concerning the restoration and future sustainable management of Chinese water systems. It presents the results of a Sino-European joint project concerning the Songhuajiang-Liaohe River Basin (SLRB) in Northeast China conducted by the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, Germany, and the Natural Environment Research Council as represented by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), UK. The book explains in great detail the development of risk assessment and corresponding management methods for (i) controlling water pollution, (ii) assessing river health and ecological restoration options, (iii) characterizing persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and (iv) protecting fragile groundwater resources. It also describes the implemented demonstration sites of SLRB during the project course as well as lessons learnt on efficient project management and the dissemination of knowledge and technologies.

Environmental pollution poses serious challenges for China, including to its economy as well as public health. The China Story Yearbook 2015: Pollution looks at how China’s Communist Party-state addresses these problems and how Chinese citizens have coped with and expressed their concerns about living with chronic, worsening pollution. This Yearbook also explores the broader ramifications of pollution in the People’s Republic for culture, society law and social activism, as well as the Internet, language, thought, and approaches to history. It looks at how it affects economic and political developments, urban change, and China’s regional and global posture. The Chinese Communist Party, led by ‘Chairman of Everything’ Xi Jinping, meanwhile, has subjected mainland society to increasingly repressive control in its new determination to rid the country of Western ‘spiritual pollutants’ while achieving cultural purification through ‘propaganda and ideological work’. To adulterate, contaminate, spoil or violate—these are among the metaphorical and literal connotations of pollution expressed in this Yearbook via the character ran ?, which forms part of the word for pollution in Chinese, wuran ??. As the world increasingly relies on economic ties with China, the complexities of China’s one-party system and the Chinese government’s attitudes towards ‘pollution’ are of increasing global significance.
