"Thompson, born on a Maryland plantation in 1812, escaped to Pennsylvania but fell into a harried itinerant pattern. The passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act put him in danger even in free states ; after six months of work arranged by a Quaker, he and his companion were forced to leave by the appearance of slave hunters.
