DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume presents expanded versions of papers read at a bi-national symposium convened in Jerusalem in December 1992. Organised within the framework of meetings held world-wide in remembrance of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, this conference focused on aspects of the profession and ethics of medicine. The major topics explored at the symposium were the relationships among physicians of different denominations and between them and the authorities; the image and status of the converso physician; questions of medical licensing and compensation; attitudes regarding suffering, pain and the care of infants; and the influence of medieval Jewish and Moslem religious law concepts underlying the care and treatment of patients. Other papers relate to the early modern period and to current problems of medical ethics, illustrating the impact of historical approaches on the development of the discipline of medical ethics today.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Castilian Assembly of the Clergy has been overlooked in the scholarship on church-state relations and representative institutions in the early modern period. This oversight has distorted our understanding of political practice, royal finance, and church-state relations in sixteenth-century Castile. By examining the negotiations for subsidies between the crown and the Assembly, this book illuminates the dynamics between church and state and the limits of royal control over the church, and it challenges long-held conventions about the monolithic structure of the Spanish church and its subservience to the crown. The negotiations for subsidies also demonstrate the importance of consensus in the political process and how the Assembly sustained itself and its privileges for centuries through collaboration with the crown.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThese two volumes present a conspectus of current research on the history and culture of early medieval Spain and Portugal, from the time of the Arab conquest in 711 up to the fall of the caliphate. They trace the impact of Islamisation on the pre-existing Roman and Visigothic political and social structures, the continuing interaction between Christian and Muslim, and describe the particular development and characteristics of Muslim Spain- al-Andalus. Together, they comprise 38 articles, of which 32 have been translated into English specially for this publication. The first volume focuses on political and social history, and looks in detail at settlement patterns and urbanisation; the second examines questions of language and covers the brilliant cultural and intellectual history of the period.
