Excerpt from Virgil's Biographia Litteraria Certain theses have developed themselves in the course of this study first, that Virgil's patriotism took its colour from allied sentiment of the Social War second, that he was always a Caesarian, and, from the first sight of the lad Octavius, an Octavian, the first Augustan third, that from the time of the Pharsalian campaign he was always a militant anti-antonian. This means that the subject of the series of Catullan iambics was Antony. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of Virgil: Literally Translated Into English Prose, With Notes The object of the publishers in issuing the present volume was not so much to produce a new book, as to render an old and, in many respects, a good one, more suited to the present state of scholarship, and the exi' gences of the student. Excerpt from The Georgics of Virgil: Translated Into English Verse Whether the didactic or the poetic spirit chiefly inspired Virgil in his Georgia is to the modern reader a matter of modest concern. Possibly Augustus, as he listened to the stately hexameters which Virgil and Maecenas read aloud to him at Atella, welcomed the popularity of the poem as an incentive to bring back to the land and to the manly life of the rural districts those ancient yeomen, whom agricultural depression, tempered by panem cl cinemas, had in past years collected at Rome. Undoubtedly, I think, he hailed with delight this triumph of Virgil's genius as a significant exemplar of that native literature which Roman thinkers and Roman writers had so long desired. To us latter-day students of the great master there is need for no such esoteric criticism, and we contentedly accept the most complete of Latin classics as a supreme model of harmony in rhythm and dignity in diction. Excerpt from Studies in Virgil It is generally recognized that at present there is a movement in education away from the Classics. The questions are being raised in the older English Universities, whether after all Greek is a necessary part of every branch of study, and whether it should remain a compulsory subject in every curriculum. In America and in the British Colonies a further stage has been reached. Tradition there has less power; Greek as a compulsory subject has been quite discarded, and Latin itself is in some places a more or less optional subject. The possibilities of danger to education generally which are involved in this attitude toward classical studies need no remark. Yet there is another aspect of the matter which deserves consideration, and here I may be allowed to speak from my own experience. I found when I was Professor of Latin in a Canadian University a system of 'options' in vogue, which permitted a man, if he so wished, to drop the Classics altogether at a very early stage. The higher study of Latin and Greek was, of course, as in England, a matter of free choice for the student who hoped for honours. But the second of the two pass classes in Latin, involving acquaintance with some half-dozen books, a little unseen translation, and a very little prose composition, could be avoided if a student so determined. Latin, in other words, had to compete with all sorts of subjects, and to stand on its own merits. A curious result followed. Excerpt from The Works of Virgil, Translated, Vol. 1 of 2: The First Four Pastorals; The Georgics; The First Four Aeneids; The Last Six Pastorals; The Last Eight Aeneids Its essential properties, and to write a owing verse, varied by pauses, which correspond to those of Virgil in general effect. I deem it advisable in translation, to adhere to the letter of the original, where such adherence can be made not less poetical than a deviation from it though, in order to give fair play to the idioms of our language, it may often be desirable, to use terms which are equivalent rather than literal, and to alter the construction of sentences, or the position of words. I have laid down this rule for myself, never to give Virgil's Muse an ornament, which does not belong to her; but I have occasionally found it necessary, to expand the words of my Author, in order to convey his full meaning clearly to the English reader.
