'i have tainted the blood of the family, by marrying a tradesman's daughter, when I might have enriched it by marrying the daughter of an Earl; and my mo ther unhappily joined with him in all his objections. But you are not of his family after all; and how could you, with your comparatively small fortune, and when even that was not to be yours till after your father's death, support the daughter of an Ear], in the extravagant style in which they generally expect to live'! Caesarius was a monk at the Cistercian monastery of Heisterbach in Germany, where he served as Master of novices. For their instruction and edification, he composed his lengthy Dialogue on Miracles in twelve sections between 1219 and 1223. The many surviving manuscripts of this and other works by Caesarius attest to his stature in the history of Cistercian letters. This second volume contains sections seven through twelve of Caesarius of Heisterbach’s Dialogue on Miracles, the first complete translation into English of an influential representation of exempla literature from the Middle Ages. Caesarius’s stories provide a splendid index to monastic life, religious practices, and daily life in a tumultuous time.

Robert A. Heinlein: In Dialogue with his Century: 1948-1988 The Man Who Learned Better: The real-life story of Robert A. Heinlein in the second volume of the authorized biography by William H. Patterson! Robert A. Heinlein (1907–1988) is generally considered the greatest American science fiction writer of the twentieth century. His most famous and widely influential works include the Future History series (stories and novels collected in The Past Through Tomorrow and continued in later novels), Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress—all published in the years covered by this volume. He was a friend of admirals, bestselling writers, and artists; became committed to defending the United States during the Cold War; and was on the advisory committee that helped Ronald Reagan create the Star Wars Strategic Defense Initiative in the 1980s. Heinlein was also devoted to space flight and humanity's future in space, and he was a commanding presence to all around him in his lifetime. Given his desire for privacy in the later decades of his life, the revelations in this biography make for riveting reading. Excerpt from Village Dialogues, Vol. 1 of 2: Between Farmer Littleworth, Thomas Newman, Rev. Mr. Lovegood, and Others; From the Eighteenth London Edition, With Additional Dialogues Contrary to the accustomed rule of most authors, no Preface or Introduction has been hitherto thought of by way of recommending these Dialogues to the public notice; they have been entirely left to speak for themselves: and the public attention has been attracted by them, far beyond my expectation. As we grow old, it is fit we should grow modest. This edition, therefore, appears more according to the accustomed form, and modestly asks for a farther hearing, especially, as it is to be hoped, that some alterations, and many additions will be found as amendments to the work. The last impression was rendered so tardy in its circulation, by an unfortunate sale of the copy-right, that by many it was deemed to be out of print, so that the present impression will appear like a life from the dead. I am happy to be informed by the respectable Bookseller, who now possesses the copy-right, that the price, and manner of publishing the present edition, will render it an easy purchase to the public; and in this, I trust, I shall have my reward.
