Excerpt from Valour and Vision: Poems of the War, 1914-1918 The intention is to present the poet as the historian, and to illustrate the different aspects and phases of the war by contemporary poetry. An attempt has been made to select a number of poems of real literary value, and arrange them in ordered sequence. Since the historian is concerned with the thoughts and aspirations of a nation as well as with actual events, the poems chosen are not only descriptive of campaigns and battles, but in many cases expressive of moods and memories some have served a passing purpose, others deal with thoughts and episodes that should never be forgotten. The poems have been grouped chronologically in five sections corresponding to the five years of the war. A short and very informal list of the principal events of the year has been placed at the beginning of each section and is merely intended to supply the context of the poems that follow.
