"This paper proposes the application of the structure of a story to assist in the design of choral concert programming. The implementation of research-proven principles of storytelling assists in meeting the needs of the twenty-first century musician and audience. The document begins by emphasizing the importance of thoughtful repertoire selection and creation of engaging concert programs to attract and maintain students and listeners. The development of the professional choir and its influence on the current choral concert format is briefly explored, followed by an overview of programming trends from the 1970s to the present. Data from American Choral Directors Association National Convention performances, honor choir programs, and survey studies are utilized to formulate conclusions. The needs of the twenty-first century audience, composed of the ensemble members, listeners, and conductor him/herself, are considered, and the neurological research behind the power of a story is discussed. Existing uses of story in the musical arts is explored, suggestions given regarding how to apply the structure of a story to the creation of a choral concert, and example programs examined. The goal in suggesting the use of story to design concert programs is not to invalidate any existing formula of programming, but rather to present a new idea for consideration: the structure of a story offers an effective organizational tool to facilitate the design of concert programs that deeply engage the hearts and minds of the audience"--Abstract.
