A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a wireless network that does not rely on any fixed infrastructure (i.e., routing facilities, such as wired networks and access points), and whose nodes must coordinate among themselves to determine connectivity and routing. Coordination in ad hoc networks includes operations such as neighborhood discovery, organization of nodes (i.e., topology control and clustering), and routing. Most mechanisms performing these operations employ broadcasting of signaling messages as the underlying mechanism. The broadcast can target a portion of the network (e.g., gathering neighborhood information), or the entire network (e.g., discovering routes on demand). The focus of this thesis is the design and analysis of algorithms that improve broadcasting and hierarchical organization in ad hoc networks. To design such algorithms, concepts from domination in graphs are explored, because of their similarities to the problems arising with the broadcasting of signaling and data in MANETs.

With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - ableapproachtobuildinghighlyreliableandinherentlydistributedapplications. ISPA2004 provided a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and ind- try to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, research results, and applications about all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. There was a very large number of paper submissions (361) from 26 countries and regions, including not only Asia and the Paci?c, but also Europe and North America. All submissions were reviewed by at least three program or technical committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for the conference because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions. In order to allocate as many papers as possible and keep the high quality of the conference, we ?nally decided to accept 78 regular papers and 38 short papers for oral technical presentations. We believe that all of these papers and topics not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress and state-of-the-art techniques in this ?eld, but also stimulate the future research activities in the area of parallel and distributed computing with applications.

Welcome to the proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Future Gene- tion Communication and Networking (FGCN 2010) – one of the partnering events of the Second International Mega-Conference on Future Generation Information Technology (FGIT 2010). FGCN brings together researchers from academia and industry as well as practit- ners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of communication and networking, including their links to computational sciences, mathematics and information technology. In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries, which - cludes 150 papers submitted to the FGCN 2010 Special Sessions. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: 395 of the 1,630 papers were - cepted for FGIT 2010, while 70 papers were accepted for the FGCN 2010 Special Sessions. Of the 70 papers, 6 were selected for the special FGIT 2010 volume p- lished by Springer in LNCS series. Fifty-one papers are published in this volume, and 13 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons.
