DOWNLOAD EBOOKWe present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy top-like (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−1 collected by the CDF II detector in proton-antiproton collisions at [square root s] = 1.96 TeV center of mass energy. A searche for t' --> Wb in events containing a lepton and four or more jets is conducted. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t' quark mass, we set upper limits on the t't̄' pair production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to Wb with mass below 358 GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe CDF and D0 collaborations have updated their measurements of the mass of the top quark using proton-antiproton collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV produced at the Tevatron. The uncertainties in each of the top-antitop decay channels have been reduced. The new Tevatron average for the mass of the top quark based on about 1 fb−1 of data per experiment is 170.9 ± 1.8 GeV/c2.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe D0 collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50 pb−1. We have searched for t{bar t} production in the dilepton and single lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b quark jets. We observe 17 events with an expected background of 3.8 " 0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2 x 10−6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 19921{sup +19} (stat.) "22 (syst.) GeV/c2 and its production cross section to be 6.4 " 2.2 pb.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWe present the first evidence for electroweak single top quark production using nearly 1 fb-1 of Tevatron Run II data at s = 1.96 TeV. We select single-top-like data events in the lepton+jets decay channel and separate them from backgrounds using the matrix element analysis method. This technique uses leading order matrix elements to compute an event probability for both signal and background hypotheses. Using the expected signal acceptance, background, and observed data we measure the single top quark cross section: spp&d1;→ tb+tqb+X=4.6+1.8-1.5 pb The probability for the background to have fluctuated up to give at least the cross section measured in this analysis is 0.21%, which corresponds to a Gaussian equivalent significance of 2.9sigma.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe authors present recent preliminary measurements of the top-antitop pair production cross section and determinations of the top quark pole mass, performed using the data collected by the CDF and D0 Collaborations at the Tevatron Collider. In the lepton plus jets final state, with semileptonic B decay, the pair production cross section has now been measured at CDF using (almost equal to) 760 pb−1 of proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of (square root)s = 1.96 TeV. A measurement of the production cross section has also been made with (almost equal to) 1 fb−1 of data in the all-jets final state by the CDF Collaboration. The mass of the top quark has now been measured using (almost equal to) 1 fb−1 of collision data using all decay channels of the top quark pair, yielding the most precise measurements of the top mass to date.
