Excerpt from Untrodden Spain, and Her Black Country, Vol. 2 of 2: Being Sketches of the Life and Character, of the Spaniard of the Interior Although, taken per se, they are rather dry reading, yet a certain amount of interest attaches to the form taken by proclamations, official documents, ceremonial letters, and the like, differing in different countries. I therefore present a short sketch of some of those with which the traveller in Spain will become conversant. The surroundings and accompaniments of the proclamation of martial law are much as follows, and, having twice been resident in a town while martial law has been proclaimed, I may vouch for the accuracy of the picture drawn. There are certain towns in the interior which always enjoy an unenviable notoriety for being the head-quarters of disaffection, whenever disaffection - as in ill-governed Spain is far from uncommon - comes to a head. Excerpt from Untrodden Spain, and Her Black Country, Vol. 1 of 2: Being Sketches of the Life and Character, of the Spaniard of the Interior Mindful of the warning contained in the above oft-quoted anecdote, the writer of these pages has endeavoured rather to present to the reader a series of simple sketches from life, printed, as they were originally Written, with the rough edge full upon them, than to offer many observations or reflections of his o'wn upon the state of things he has attempted to depict. Like the solicitor above referred to, he has not been able to repress all his observations; but he' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shubert analyzes the business of the sport, and explores the bullfighters' world: their social and geographic origins, careers, and social status. Here also are surprising revelations about the sport, such as the presence of women bullfighters - and the larger gender issues that this provoked. From the political use of bullfighting in royal and imperial pageants to the nationalistic "great patriotic bullfights" of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this is both a fascinating portrait of bullfighting and a vivid recreation of two centuries of Spanish history.
