This Technology Application Guide is designed to help the user select and apply leak detection and location equipment for pressurized, high-capacity, underground, fuel-pipelines typical of hydrant systems at Navy bases. Many variables must be considered when researching, selecting, and purchasing underground pipleline leak detection equipment. These variables include regulations, technology type, climate, soil type, groundwater, funding, and site logistics. At this time, there is no commercially available technology that meets all of the Navy's leak detection and location needs. Different leak detection and location problems can be solved with different technologies, including tracers, temperature-compensated pressure testing, and smart-pigging. This Technology Application Guide provides the user with the tools required for solving this problem. Specifically, the Guide explains: 1) How to determine the applicable pipeline leak detection regulations. 2) How the different leak detection and location technologies work. 3) Which technologies are best suited to solve different problems. 4) Which technologies are evolving for future applications. 5) Identify point of contacts for pipe leak detection (PLD) within the Department of Defense (DOD) and in private industry.

Ageing infrastructure and declining water resources are major concerns with a growing global population. Controlling water loss has therefore become a priority for water utilities around the world. In order to improve efficiencies, water utilities need to apply good practices in leak detection. Leak Detection: Technology and Implementation assists water utilities with the development and implementation of leak detection programs. Leak detection and repair is one of the components of controlling water loss. In addition, techniques are discussed within this book and relevant case studies are presented. This book provides useful and practical information on leakage issues.

Pipeline spills occur as pipeline infrastructure ages and more hazardous products are transported. Regrettably, too many leak detection systems fail to detect these leaks, and other leak detection systems are ignored by the operators because they are unreliable. Thus, leaks that should have been small spills become disasters that cost pipeline owners millions of dollars. The key to the successful operation of pipeline leak detection systems is management commitment that assures the allocation of sufficient resources to the ongoing maintenance of leak detection systems and their supporting components. Every pipeline operator should consider a role for a leak detection champion who understands how their system works, continually monitors its performance, and supports the Pipeline Controllers. The leak detection system is not "fit-and-forget" and it requires ongoing management which is best achieved in-house with vendor support. Building a companywide leak detection culture, where pipeline leak detection is understood and valued from the top ranks to the field operators will reduce loss of containment incidents. "Introduction to Pipeline Leak Detection" explains the key leak detection technologies deployed to detect leaks on pipelines today in simple concise language that is easily understood by everyone.

This book includes six chapters aiming to introduce global pipeline inspection and health monitoring technologies comprehensively. The pipeline is the blood vessel of the energy system and a vital lifeline project. After many years of service, the pipeline gradually enters the aging stage. Pipeline inspection and health monitoring can effectively reduce the failure and accident risks of the pipeline, and it is conducive to integrity management. Through case analysis, practitioners can have a deeper understanding of the application of related technologies.

A computer simulation program in conjunction with an instrument systems analysis program lead to the conclusion that microwave radiometry working in concert with thermal infrared systems could detect petroleum product pipeline leaks. The utilization of these systems from an airborne platform would result in a low false alarm rate and a high probability of leak detection. A demonstration experiment was designed to test the simulation program. This demonstration was carried out in west Texas along three different pipeline sections with eighteen individual leak circumstances. All data, airborne and ground, was reduced, correlated and analyzed to demonstrate remote sensor capabilities. It was found that the apparent microwave (13.7 GHz) temperature of a leak increases significantly compared to surface material containing no oil. Also, a soil containing oil caused a decrease in polarization contrast. Thermal infrared showed a warm area surrounded by a cool halo. When these circumstances all occurred together a leak was identified, proving the correctness of the original computer simulations.
