The San Diego Padres became a National League expansion team in 1969. Through 37 seasons of play, the Padres have never won a World Series, never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter, and never had a player hit for the cycle. They have, however, made it to the World Series twice, had three different pitchers win the Cy Young Award, and had a player tie Honus Wagner for most National League batting titles (eight). They almost lost the franchise to Washington, D.C., had an owner take the public address microphone on opening day to blast his own players, and created national headlines when a nationally-known comedienne performed her version of the national anthem before a game.Longtime Padres announcer Bob Chandler knows the details behind all of these stories and shares his memories with San Diego baseball historian Bill Swank in an easy-to-read recap of the team's colorful past. They also look at many other stories: sick and severely dehydrated on the trainer's table, Ken Caminiti had an IV removed from his arm, ate a Snickers bar, then hit two home runs against the New York Mets in Mexico; the comic relief provided by the San Diego Chicken during the Padres lean years; and how popular Padre Tim Flannery became the mascot - a cross between a dinosaur and an anteater.Chandler and Swank utilize their numerous contacts to bring fans many inside stories and humorous anecdotes dating back to the team's actual birth on May 27, 1968. Eight-time batting champion Tony Gwynn and Cy Young Award-winner Randy Jones are among the former players providing insight and inside stories. Chandler's longtime broadcast partner Jerry Coleman, elected to the broadcasters' wing of the baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, has written the foreword. A colorful collection of owners, managers, coaches, and players over the years lends themselves to many interesting tales from the dugout, which all adds up to an informative, insider's look at the behind-the-scenes events that have shaped the history of the San Diego Padres.

Padres in No Man's Land is the compelling story of brave and deeply committed army chaplains who brought faith and courage to Canada's troops during one of history's most devastating wars. Tracing the growth of the Canadian Chaplain Service from its chaotic and controversy-ridden early days to its maturation as an efficient field force, Duff Crerar highlights both the role of the Service on the battlefield and the personal experiences of the chaplains. Refuting the widely held view that chaplains serving overseas were cloistered from front-line realities, Crerar describes the padres' experiences in camps, hospitals, and on the battlefield. He examines how they maintained their faith in the face of death and destruction, and explores the bonds forged between chaplains and troops. Padres in No Man's Land concludes in the postwar era with the decline of the chaplains' hopes for spiritual renewal upon their return to Canada - their dreams dashed not by the war, but by the subsequent peace.

This book contains my impressions and perspectives of the Philippines, the United States, and the world for that matter, of my life struggles and dream of opportunity. It’s intended as a guidebook for regular and ordinary life both in the Philippines and in the United States depending on your inclinations, abilities, income and economic status. Consider this as a report from my own listening post. It contains actual interviews with people and excerpts from newspapers, magazines, books and the Internet. My intention was to depict my own personal life and my family ‘s, and write about my own story based upon personal experiences, but also to describe certain mores, attitudes, customs and cultures of various people in Philippine and American society as I see or interpret them, trying not to offend or annoy. My observations may not jibe with some people’s cultural make-up, political conviction, religious beliefs, personal experience, sensitivity and interpretation of certain issues and things, but such is life. I know that no matter where I stand and wherever I go, it’s always my opinion against any others, and I have lots of opinions that can cause obvious negative reactions in the simplest of minds. The world is full of cuckoos and we even admire some of them depending on who you ask. When it comes to some very burning questions, the first casualty is truth since there’s a big difference between knowing the real story and the story we’re told. The historical events and lore that I have used as backdrop are based upon factual records and are of common knowledge in the Philippines and in the United States, but people inject their own spin, opinion, hypocrisy, dogma, self-righteousness, politics, pandering, feeling, insight and experience into certain circumstances, as I did. I have tried to be as truthful and transparent as possible in my own light. You can scoff at me but I have no political agenda and I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I am just that I am. I’m not rewriting history but trying to give history its true light and history is fickle. In my defense I quote the philosopher Voltaire “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”. I also have to show my credentials as Filipino so as to be able to tell Filipino jokes and not get in trouble, in consideration that this is my swan song. I have lived in these United States since 1968, been drafted to the conflict in Vietnam, worked long and hard in my profession, have family, traveled far, now retired, and have seen so much of the American society that I almost think of myself as a native. On this note I beg for tolerance.

Every day of the year, somewhere in the United States, some sort of holiday or special remembrance is being observed by individuals, organizations, or governments. January 30 is Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day. On March 26, Hawaii celebrates Prince Janah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day. November 9 is set aside for Women Veterans Day in Alaska, while in Puerto Rico they honor baseball scout Pedrin Zorilla, and as the sun sets, New Jersey holds a Kristallnacht Memorial Night. This book is a detailed reference work about holidays and special observances established by statute in the United States, including American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Because the United States is a member state of the United Nations, U.N.-designated holidays and longer periods of time, such as years and decades devoted to important world issues, are also included. Following the day-by-day section, holidays are listed chronologically within their jurisdictions (federally designated observances are first in the list; states and territories follow in alphabetical order). A subject index offers access to particular topics (nursing, education, peace...) and a name index indicates holidays celebrating the lives of individuals.
