The story of the American self-made man carries a perennial interest in American literature and cultural studies. This book expands the study of such stories to include the writings of Frederick Douglass, Horatio Alger, and James Weldon Johnson, and the work of silent comedians like Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton. Thomas Nissley examines a number of texts, from Reconstruction-era autobiographies to the films of the 30s, to show the sustained market value of status and personal authenticity in the era of contract and free labor.

In the stories of Mad Hope, Heather Birrell finds the heart of her characters and lets them lead us into worlds both unrecognizable and alarming. We think we know these people but discover we don't—they are more alive, more real, and more complex than we first imagined. A high school science teacher is forced to re-examine the role he played in Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania after a student makes a shocking request. The uncertainty, anxiety, and anticipation of pregnancy are examined through an online chat group. Parenting is viewed from the perspective of a gay man caring for his friend and her adopted son. A tragic plane crash becomes the basis for a meditation on motherhood and its discontents. Birrell uses precise, inventive language to capture the beautiful mess of being human—and more than lives up to her Journey Prize accolades. Her characters come to greet us, undo us, make us yearn, and make us smile. Heather Birrell is the author of the story collection I know you are but what am I? Her work has been honored with the prestigious Journey Prize for short fiction and the Edna Staebler Award for creative nonfiction.

This vintage book contains three short stories written by Joseph Conrad. These stories do not share the same narrative, but do share a theme: the stages of life. 'Youth' focuses on a young man’s first sea-voyage to the East; 'Heart of Darkness' concerns a particularly unenlightened maturity; and 'The end of the Tether' deals with the old age of an ex-military man. Conrad's masterful writing has influenced many important twentieth-century writers and artists, including T. S. Eliot, Jorge Luis Borges, and Werner Herzog. This text is highly recommended for fans of Conrad’s seminal work, and it would make for a worthy addition to any collection. This antiquarian volume is being republished now in an affordable, modern edition - complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

'(Conrad) thought of civilised and morally tolerable human life as a dangerous walk on a thin crust of barely cooled lava which at any moment might break and let the unwary sink into fiery depths' - Bertrand Russell This selection of four tales by Conrad is about radical insecurity: lone human beings involuntarily forced into confrontation with a terrifying universe in which they can never be wholly at home. It leads with 'The End of the Tether' and includes also ' The Duel', ' The Return', and 'Amy Foster' - Sailor, Soldier, Rich Man, Immigrant. These powerful shorter works remind readers that Conrad is not just the teller of sea stories and tales of imperialist action, and not only the author of the ubiquitous 'Heart of Darkness'. This is the Conrad who is master of the terror element - global crisis, individual test, and personal trauma - in modern literature. For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

"Intellectual cyberpunk without the physical wiring." "DIATRǼCUS" is the first book of the TETHER trilogy-dealing with a fractal-attributed, yet fully realized and resolved, narrative. "DIATRǼCUS" is about self-assertion of identity, as well as the values of integrity, devotion, loyalty, betrayal, and love-mixed with the underlying forces of agenda, 'truth, ' and perspective. The novel combines multiple fictional and non-fictional genres, into what some now call "trans-humanism." This sci-fi/fantasy (cyberpunk) novel might best be described as Isaac Asimov meets J.R.R. Tolkien meets C.S. Lewis meets Ayn Rand meets William Gibson-on steroids. It comprises multiple sub-narratives folded into a matrixed super narrative, with plots and actions and characters and agendas threaded throughout. Or, in a word, "DIATRǼCUS" is simply: 'transcendent.'
