Excerpt from Twenty-Third Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England, 1862 The aggregate number of names enrolled in the Register Books of England and Wales, in that year, was not equal to the number in 1859 but the decrease is not a subject of regret, for it arose chiefly from the fact that the mortality was comparatively low in 1860. The deaths were less than they had been in the previous year'; the births were nearly 5000 less; but the marriages were more numerous than they had been either then or at any former time. Excerpt from Twenty-Sixth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England, 1865 The cloud passing over the cotton manufacturing districts in 1861 and 1862 was reflected at once in the marriage registers, and the rate which in 1860 was as high as 1 710 persons married to every 100 persons living, was reduced to in 1861, and further to in 1862. In 1863 the crisis had passed after a bountiful harvest the people began to think more favourably of their prospects, and marriage proceeded at an augmented rate, the proportion to every 100 persons living rising to 1 688, while the average of the last 26 years was 1 '640. Excerpt from Fourteenth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England Until the census of 18 51 had been taken, the rates of marriage, birth, and of mortality were necessarily calculated on the population returns of 1841 raised, as the population was known to be increasing, in the pro portion inferred from the rate that had been found to prevail between 1831 and 1841. We now learn from the census that the population after the year 1841 was overstated to a slight extent by this assumption; the population of England and Wales increased rather faster in the ten years 1831 - 41 than it did in the ten years 1841-51, when emigration became more active; for the annual rate of increase of the population at home and abroad was 1 326 in the former, 1 216 per cent. In the latter period. The population at home in England and Wales, or exclusive of the por tion of the army, navy, and merchant seamen abroad, in the middle of the years 1841 and 18 51 was and and therefore, upon the hypothesis that the increase was uniformly in a geometrical ratio, the annual rate of increase was 122o. The rate of increase in the years 1838, 1839, 1840, was taken to be 1' 326; the exact proportion of the population at home in 183 1 not having been determined.
