DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Trichotomy in Roman Law Some years ago I contributed an article to a Festschrift in honour of Professor Carlo Fadda of Naples, in which I examined the classifications of obligations in Justinian's Institutes, and I endeavoured to show that the peculiar divisions into groups of four that we there meet with may be traced to a desire for artificial symmetry on the part of the Editors, and were neither based on any considerations of logic nor the result of mere coincidence. This article was published in the Studi Fadda in 1906 under the title 'Artificiality in Roman Juristic Classifications, ' and its conclusions, though not generally accepted, have been received with favour by some eminent Romanists who have been good enough to write to me about it. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis Dictionary: explains technical Roman legal terms, translates & elucidate those Latin words which have a specific connotation when used in a juristic context or in connection with a legal institution or question, & provides a brief picture of Roman legal institutions & sources as a sort of an introduction to them. The objectives of the work, not the juristic character of available Latin writings, therefore, determined the inclusion or exclusion of any single word or phrase. This dict. is not intended to be a complete Latin-English dict. for all words which occur in the writings of the Roman jurists or in the various codifications of Roman law. The reader must consult a general Latin-English lexicon for ordinary words that have no specific meaning in law or juristic language. Reprinted 1980.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKReprint of the uncommon third and final edition. This book grew out of an article in the Encyclpedia Brittanica. An "instant classic," it soon became a fixture on reading lists and bibliographies. According to the Law Quarterly Review, "no one who has read the book can have felt any doubt that the author had mastered his authorities, or that he had a singularly wide and profound knowledge of the continental literature dealing with the subject" (15:198). The second and third editions were equally well-received. The third is the best edition because it contains the equally valuable notes of Goudy and Grant. CONTENTS PART I THE REGAL PERIOD CH. I.
