From the origins of Muhammad's prophetic movement through the development of Islam's principal branches to the establishment of the Umayyad dynasty, the concept of authority has been central to Islamic civilization. By examining the nature, organization, and transformation of authority over time, Dabashi conveys both continuities and disruptions inherent in the development of a new political culture. It is this process, he argues, that accounts for the fundamental patterns of authority in Islam that ultimately shaped, in dialectical interaction with external historical factors, the course of Islamic civilization. The book begins by examining the principal characteristics of authority in pre-Islamic Arab society. Dabashi describes the imposition of the Muhammadan charismatic movement on pre-Islamic Arab culture, tracing the changes it introduced in the fabric of pre-Islamic Arabia. He examines the continuities and changes that followed, focusing on the concept of authority, and the formation of the Sunnite, Shiite, and Karajite branches of Islam as political expressions of deep cultural cleavages. Weber's concept of charismatic authority promises a framework for studying the interaction of individual's feelings with a perceived system of authority. But this ideal type has rarely been interpreted in a manner amenable to empirical research. By content analysis of Weber's explicit references to charismatic authority (in translation), and of scholarly interpretations of these references, a clearly defined and practical concept emerges. Charisma is attributed extraordinary power. Weber's concept of authority implicitly emphasizes the relationship of the followers to their personal choice of action: traditional authority ignores choice; rational-legal authority emphasizes choice according to self-interest; and charismatic authority emphasizes the choice to relinquish personal choice to the authority. Weber' s concept of charismatic authority comprises three features: 1) collective recognition of the authority, b) absolute devotion of some of the followers to the authority, and c) a test of charisma which may justify a follower's absolute devotion. This test is analyzed into three conditions which, taken together, influence the follower's affirmation of charismatic legitimacy: a) extraordinary objects of perception or conception, b) identification of the cause or causes of these objects, and c) the experiences associated with these attributed causes. Each of these conditions is analyzed into a comprehensive list of ideal sub-types, and a paradigm is constructed as a guide for empirical ranking of these sub-types according to the extent of the follower's affirmation.

Taking as his starting-point Jesus' saying in Matt 8:22, "Let the dead bury the dead," Professor Hengel subjects Jesus' discipleship sayings to a rigorous historical scrutiny. The sharp break with contemporary Jewish mores in Matt 8:22 leads Hengel to a consideration of other contemporary forms of discipleship -- Cynic, Rabbinic, and Zealot.
