Excerpt from The Home to the Camp: Addressed to the Soldiers of the Union A little while ago you were here with us and of as, - husbands, fathers, brothers. We knew you as our daily companions. To your strong love we looked, in your strong arm we trusted. Others knew you as merchants, mechanics, manufacturers; we knew you as the central figures of our homes, - our pride, our solace, our support. Today we miss you. We gather at our meals, or around the evening table, and your place is vacant. In a thousand ways we feel that you are gone, and the world outside its places of traffic, its circles of friendship, its houses of prayer - mourns an absence which subtracts as much from its pleasure as its power. There are great gaps in our hearts and our homes, which can not be closed because of you. It is not like the void death makes. The old places are kept open and warm for you. You are only absent, and we wait and watch; daily and nightly we pray for you, for your safety and your good, and your speedy com ing to us again. No. 8. Your absence is peculiar. You have torn your selves from endearments, from prosperities, from plans, and have put in peril property, comfort, life, and health, for no personal or selfish end. The great mother who bore and nurtured us in her sore sorrow has cried for help, and you have answered to the cry and are sworn to rescue. Others may have failed to understand your self-devotion, but your homes have not, - your God has not. If your absence is peculiar, so is our memory of you. In your knapsacks, in secret pockets, about your person, you have all some cherished token of thoughtful affection. The cry of Mail in the camp brings the weary to their feet, and makes the whole man aglow with a longing hope, and the dear and tender words that swim before your eyes waken memories, not to subdue, but to make still nobler your resolve. And beside - as never into camp before - there comes from time to time, breaking the monotony of army rations, something that the good mother, the dear wife, the gentle sister, re members was your special fancy, which their own hands have made and their own thought sent, while their hearts were full at thinking how it would put you in mind of home. But we have now other things than these for you, and though they may seem only to be words, yet to words, having the savor of love and faith, even the salvation of man has been intrusted. Will you take kindly of us what we give in honesty and hem? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The One Hundred and Twentieth Regiment New York State Volunteers: A Narrative of Its Services in the War for the Union New York was behind none Of her sister States in the promptness with which she responded to the President's call, and in her large and free contributions of troops to swell the armies of the Republic. Her soldiers were found in every part of the widely-extended field where their services were needed. They stood shoulder to shoulder with comrades from other States, cheerfully bearing whatever burdens their duty to the country and love for the cause imposed upon them. This State has a bright record for the number and character Of the troops she furnished during the war, not less than for the amount of hard service they rendered in defending the flag and securing success for the national cause. Excerpt from Young Folk's History of the War for the Union HE writer has endeavored to give, in the following pages, an unprejudiced and impartial account of our great Civil War. The difficulty of such a task can scarcely be appreciated by one who has not himself made the attempt. The echoes of the contest have scarcely yet died away, and the bitter feelings born of it are still apt to warp the judgment and to unfit men of either part of our country to estimate calmly the motives and acts of their opponents. Yet he who would write a truth ful history of those times must necessarily divest himself of partisanship and lift himself above the plane of local prejudice. If the writer has failed to do this, it is not because he has not made an honest effort to weigh carefully the facts as narrated by both Northern and Southern writers, and to give each side its just dues. As the work is intended primarily for young folks, the author has aimed to give, in chronological order, a plain and concise account of the most striking events of the war, enlivened by sketches of the prominent men engaged in it, and by inci dents and anecdotes illustrative of it. Though some of the stories are possibly apocryphal, many of the characteristic ones which serve to throw light upon the period and its events have been retained without any attempt to prove their truth or falsity. The writer has consulted the best available sources, and it is believed that the narrative is as nearly correct in its details as any previous work. The language used is simple, adapted to the understanding of the young, and technical words and expressions, when unavoidably used, are fully explained. The'=-illustrations are intended to be equally trustworthy, having been selected not for mere picturesqueness, but for their value in elucidating the text. The larger part of them were drawn at the time and from the objects which they represent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from National History of the War for the Union, Civil, Military and Naval, Vol. 1 of 3: Founded on Official and Other Authentic Documents The Publishers submit this record of the war for the union with a few Words of acknowledgment to their Subscribers for their support during its progress. Undertaken at an early period of the conflict, when its duration could not be calculated, the work has been steadily prosecuted, chapter by chapter contemporaneously with the rapid march of events. Relying mostly upon original documents which will always retain their, value, the narrative has been proportioned to the importance and length of the struggle; while the Artists have presented in a'series of more than seventy engravings, the most remarkable incidents and most important personages who have figured in the national history during this unprecedented struggle. In attaining this result, the Publishers have had to encounter many mechanical difficulties growing out of the interruptions of labor, and the increased price of materials, consequent upon the war but they have never suffered these embarrassments to interfere with the steady progress of the work. Excerpt from The Empty Sleeve: Or the Life and Hardships of Henry H. Meacham, in the Union Army Soon after this, came the battle of the Kappa hannock Station. Though short it left many a man lying cold, in death; but we succeeded in driving the enemy back behind their entrench ments at Mines Run. This was near Thanksgiv ing time the weather was cold and rainy, and we had to wait some time before we could follow them. But the time came, and on we went, not knowing where we were go1ng, perhaps to our long homes. Oh, that long and lonely night after we arrived there I But in the morning, we marched to the right, to Robinson's Tavern, a distance of two miles. It was raining hard at the time, but about noon, it cleared away and was very cold. Ive remained there until the next morning, when we again commenced our advance. We had not far to go before we.came near the enemy's works. Here we halted and formed our lines and after waiting, a few hours, received orders to be in readiness to make an assault on the enemy's works at four o'clock.
